Pacific Rim: The Black: Season 1 (2021)

Season 1
Pacific Rim: The Black

Critics Consensus

While The Black carries over all the grit but little of the humor that distinguishes the Pacific Rim film franchise, its striking visuals and expansion of series lore will likely please Kaiju fans.

a not-quite-there but good sequel to the original film

This is not Pacific Rim, this is a textbook example of bad writing, characters, situations and misuse of IP. I dropped midway through the fifth episode. Nothing is explained, and the story appears to be ripped straight out of The Walking Dead, which explains why I hate both shows so much. Did you want a Jaegar to have weapons? You get 1 episode of it. Did you want a happy ending for any of the episodes? Nope. It DOES have copious amounts of emotional melodrama, torture and sadistic scenes, done for "reasons" - again, nothing is explained. You want a bingo card of bad writing tropes? This is the show for you. The show doesn't have humor, any self reflection, or anything that made the original Pacific Rim movie watchable. The mecha animation is considered bad by anime standards, and the writing is bad by sixth grade standards. I never want to read anything touched by those writers ever again. Greg Johnson and Craig Kyle - Greg literally doesn't have a RT page, and Craig Kyle wrote ("executive produced") Thor 2.

it was a great, well written show that is definitely worth watching if your into anime or the pacific rim franchise.

After the 2nd film destroyed what little chances of a franchise Pacific Rim had I didn't expect much from a Netflix Anime. However its actually quite watchable and even felt good at some points. The biggest takeaway from this series is how far 3D has come though. The filters that make the visuals appear 2D are getting so seemless, it's really impressive from a technical point of view. I remember how clunky, rigid and cringe some points of Gundam Unicorn was with the 3D (2010-2014), real nice to see how the industry is evolving!

I liked it well enough. Falls somewhere between the original and uprising. The sound effects were excellent, the music could have stood some improvement, not really on par with the original. A good initial effort with room for improvement. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next series.

I like how the characters fumble around in their world rather than the story fumbling around in PACIFIC RIM THE BLACK. this style of animation has been in use for awhile now and looks pretty good but still needs some work. Water and dust are not animated smoothly. The story works together, even when it's jumping around in tone. The tonal shifts make some of the story work, though. When it's kiddish, the mature parts are surprising and kind of jump out, which lends the story a realistic texture.

Loved the animation and the story!

I liked it. It has it's obligatory dose of wokeness, but it is not too annoying.
