What to Know

Critics Consensus

Painkiller Jane's compelling concept is rapidly subdued by weak writing, shallow characters, and unconvincing dialogue, subjecting the viewers to a kind of pain that not even Jane is able to kill.

Loken conveys that mix of feelings with remarkable stamina. It's just a shame that such a strong heroine has to suffer so often. It hurts so bad, and that ain't good. Go to Full Review

Decent scripts could make it work anyway, but the first two episodes at least don't bode well; the stories are flat, and the repartee between Jane and her teammates isn't zippy enough to amuse even the comic-book crowd. Go to Full Review

She's not nearly as charismatic as was (Emmanuelle) Vaugier, and her character's story also isn't as interesting. Go to Full Review

Moody and fast-paced, this is good, only minimally pretentious, sci-fi fun. Go to Full Review

"Painkiller Jane" doesn't soar to the dramatic heights of "Battlestar," but it is a step above some of the network's other programs, a procedural thriller with a sense of humor and stylish action scenes. Go to Full Review

It seems as if the goal was to avoid hiring additional actors to play the Secret Service detail. If only Jane could kill that kind of pain. Go to Full Review

03/24/2021 In some areas the show may seem basic, with very little of the mythology's science explained, but I like that. There really is no good explanation, so it's better viewed as, "okay there are mutants basically," and just sit back and enjoy that. The cast is terrific, with Loken in particular carrying each episode easily, largely on the strength of her considerable badass charm. She is neither the best actor I've seen nor the worst, but she is the perfect Painkiller Jane. The character has a nice wry sense of humor, leavening the otherwise dark and foreboding subject matter, and the show is stylish to look at. Also the fight scenes are a lot of fun! I wish the show had had more seasons. I would have watched it as long as it aired. But the one season is pretty darn good as is. See more Read all reviews
