Critic Reviews for Painting With John Season 1

All Critics (16) | Top Critics (8)

Whether joyful or absurd, melancholic or cranky, lonely or communal, it is always a celebration of art and artists, of the process of creation.

Jan 22, 2021 | Full Review…

Painting with John is just about Lurie - his vibrant art, his singular memories, his new life among the palm trees and tree frogs, and, ultimately, his illness.

Jan 22, 2021 | Full Review…

It's a jazzy, comical showcase for Lurie to assume another of his numerous compelling guises: that of laid-back, vivid storyteller.

Feb 26, 2021 | Full Review…

Lurie mixes adult weariness with a childlike playfulness, while the show as a whole feels at once homemade and elegant.

Feb 1, 2021 | Full Review…

It's sometimes okay to just make art for the sake of expressing oneself and seeing who responds. Painting with John is evidence of that.

Jan 25, 2021 | Full Review…

Lurie is a goofball and much of Painting With John is simply going back and forth between personal recollections with some connection to his creative process and silly present-day mockery of the creative process of making a TV show.

Jan 22, 2021 | Full Review…

A cult musician, actor, and director returns with a television show that's nominally about painting but is in reality a creative and spiritual journey.

Apr 9, 2021 | Full Review…

It's a quiet, meandering, sometimes amusing, often comforting way to spend 20 minutes or so in front of the TV.

Feb 16, 2021 | Full Review…

Language, drug anecdotes in charmingly weird reality show.

Feb 2, 2021 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Painting With John is a comforting callback to bizarre artsy late night cable, like Night Flight and New Wave Theater.

Feb 1, 2021 | Full Review…

Once you're into the show's rhythms, it feels like a relaxing way to end your day.

Jan 22, 2021 | Full Review…

John Lurie is back (hopefully to stay?) and has released the most profoundly captivating narrative of 2021, so far.

Audience Reviews for Painting With John: Season 1

Wow. Even as a joke this man is not funny. At all.
  • Feb 27, 2021
Watching this show is calming and meditative. John's paintings have a childish, doodley charm to them, and seeing the close-up shots of his brush hitting the paper, while he recalls funny anecdotes from his life, adds a humor to it all that leaves you booming with laughter, yet strangely pensive at the same time. I wish they made more episodes; this show is fun to watch.

Please keep this show on forever. When I was quite young my favorite show to sort of meditate and chill was "Fishing With John". Now, when the world is even crazier and times are stressful, "Painting With John" is my welcome meditation. Keep that Lounge Lizard busy please!

If you liked watching Ozzie and Sharon, it is kind of like that but take out one of them. I wouldn't watch more than an episode of this guy talking to himself while he paints.
