Critics Consensus

Patriot's second season is dark as pitch and ticks along to a slow-burning surreality, but viewers who are willing to invest in the series' moody pleasures will find themselves infiltrated by its scabrous humor and crackerjack dialogue.

Tv Season Info

After barely surviving his Midwestern corporate cover in Season 1, U.S. intelligence officer John Tavner (Michael Dorman) finds himself without his bag of 11 million euros and no closer to the goal of influencing Iran's presidential election. As a result, John's father (Emmy winner Terry O'Quinn, Lost) orders more extreme measures in Season 2: the assassination of the pro-nuclear candidate in a heavily-guarded Paris compound. John is the linchpin of a high-stakes covert operation with profound global ramifications. And he's bringing his mom (Academy, Emmy and Golden Globe Award Nominee Debra Winger, Terms of Endearment ) with him.

Critic Reviews for Patriot Season 2

The new episodes are challenging, morose, and, at times, opaque. However, the series has immense patience and consistent empathy that ties the audience to each character.

John's reluctance and offbeat nature aside, "Patriot" checks off many boxes of the spy genre.

Patriot passes that bar and has just enough smiles to mask the melancholy at its heart and keep you urging its hero on.

Nov 29, 2018 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Far be it from me to burden you with yet another heavy recommendation, but Patriot is truly strange and for all its weirdness, it's wonderfully, entertainingly original.

Nov 27, 2018 | Full Review…

The flip side to an acquired taste like Patriot is that one person's television gold is someone else's disposable tin. But if your personal tastes run to off-kilter comedy, then this weird, atmospheric spy caper... is right up your alley.

Nov 14, 2018 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

A mood-driven blend of drama and comedy, one whose editing, direction, lighting and pithy dialogue collaborate to steep the viewer in absurdist weirdness.

Nov 9, 2018 | Full Review…

There's a confident swagger to this second season that's often glorious to behold as it makes a few broadly funny decisions with body parts and feels more confident exploring longer, nuanced, ornately constructed streams of dialogue between characters.

Nov 8, 2018 | Full Review…

Patriot, a series with some of the best episode title cards outside of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is another of the streaming service's weird gems, and its second season doubles down on its uncomfortable pleasures.

Audience Reviews for Patriot: Season 2

No third season is ludicrous!!! I watch and binge more TV than anyone I know. I watched both seasons in one day. How shows like this, the OA and others don't get to finish is mind blowing. We all understand that this is a business but quality is just as important as revenue. This pandemic has brought nothing good but it has given us more alone time. So thank you John f..cking Lakeman for making us smile! Let it go for one more, I know you wont regret it. This could be so much bigger if the people running these streaming services had a clue

Very good story, s little less than the first season. The story was diverted when the main story stopped being the most important thing to turn almost everything to the Luxembourg policewoman. The characters are very well created. The story is told with true masculine sensitivity, masculine strength both mentally and physically, surrounded by the feelings of real men and their deepest conflicts. Today it is difficult to see stories that do not show hysterical and stupid men, with conflicts of millennials. The little penis joke is good, but they came very close (with other things) to turning the series into a feminist pamphlet.

Gutted that there will be no season 3.
  • May 01, 2019
Absolutely brilliant in every way. So many layers, so many metaphors, beautifully shot, and stellar, moving, performances. This show should have as many viewers as Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.
  • Feb 27, 2019
Possibly the smartest and well crafted shows on current television.

I think I liked season 1 just a touch better than season 2, but overall i continue to love this series. They don't pull any punches and the writing continues to be good. There are a few odd coincidence in the show that seems not plausible, but I can overlook that since the rest of the show works. Everything Ioved about the first season was carried over well.

Just finished bing watching Season 2. Holy smokes! I didn't think they could improve on Season 1, but this season manages to be deeper, more intense, more evocative . A really impressively good show. I hope there is a season 3

Best show, unique, clever, funny, painful. Want more and the acting is superb by all
  • Dec 18, 2018
Somehow they managed to make it more sophisticated than season 1 and the result is amazing.
  • Dec 12, 2018
I love this show. I can see leaders trying to explain how a mission goes awry just like this show does. Great satire, because I am sure that explanations like this have occurred.
