Critic Reviews for Peaky Blinders Season 1
All Critics (15) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (13) | Rotten (2)
Peaky Blinders might just be worth the investment of a few stray hours. It's hardly revolutionary, but, like the industrial laborers in its 1919 Birmingham, England, setting, it gets the job done.
Undeniably entertaining, though more as a soap romp than a drama; I didn't feel quite as involved with the gun heist from the Birmingham Small Arms factory and the warring gangs as I think I was meant to be.
Stick with it - the cast is superb and the plot, as it shakes off a few early clichés, becomes truly absorbing.
Any lulls in the course of Peaky Blinders are more than accounted for by just getting to look at how wonderfully the series has resurrected Birmingham in the 1920s.
It is well acted and well directed and employs that meticulous attention to detail, but has yet to prove itself especially distinctive narratively.
For a sprawling soap opera that packs in Roma curses, shell shock, hash pipes, Chinatown prostitutes and gang members sporting the 1919 version of a half-shaved boy-band haircut, it doesn't have quite enough juice
There's ample drama to be found in this particularly tumultuous moment in British history, and some will no doubt appreciate the unhurried pacing.
Peaky Blinders might find itself overwhelmed by a tide of historical baggage washing away any fine detail in the characterisations.
I chided David Harewood for not sounding fully Yank in the Homeland premiere, but then didn't notice his accent one way or the other in any subsequent episode because I was involved in the story.
Everything from the colours, sets, costumes, editing and cinematography is swoon-worthy right. Peaky Blinders takes the liberty to be mystical, lyrical and a visual treat.
Overall this was pacy, looked good and was fun to watch.
Brutal violence, sex, and drugs in vintage gang drama.

Feb 25, 2021This is one of the best series ever! At first I thought I could not make it through the extreme violence, but the story, casting, and stellar performances drew me in by season 1, episode 2. It was very difficult to stop watching and I finally finished and then started watching it a second time. Cannot get the characters out of my head. Pure genius writing!

-
Dec 02, 2020I would rate this TV Series to anyone! I Love "The Shelby's" Sometimes I felt I was right there in the scene I was so wrapped up.
-
Nov 27, 2020Carefully written, well-developed, and solid direction. Each season has its own plot and complexity. Action packed, often barbaric. Most of characters has roles to play backed with superb acting. Music is a letdown, but it gets better from S4 onwards | follow us at @uncle.review

Sep 21, 2020Amazing, one of the best series I have ever seen. It has a bit of everything and everything is very exciting.
-
Sep 20, 2020Was entertaining to watch in isolation, but was filled with poor editing, writing and cliche's
-
Sep 11, 2020"Peaky Blinders" sports one of the best casts in current television. It's hard to imagine anyone but Cillian Murphy as the lead. The cast, writing, music, and directing technique work in concert to make a beautifully constructed plot into an untouchable work of art. The story is played out in such a way that allows the audience to float on the edge of the earth, tipping for a moment into the abyss of fiction, before being dragged back to the battlefield of reality.
