Britain is a mixture of despair and hedonism in 1919 in the aftermath of the Great War. Returning soldiers, newly minted revolutions and criminal gangs are fighting for survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. One of the most powerful gangs of the time is the Peaky Blinders, run by returning war hero Thomas Shelby and his family. But Thomas has bigger ambitions than just running the streets. When a crate of guns goes missing, he recognizes an opportunity to advance in the world because crime may pay but legitimate business pays better. Trying to rid Britain of its crime is Inspector Chester Campbell, who arrives from Belfast to try to achieve that goal.

This is a drama at that imperious stage where it's hard to go wrong -- confident in its storytelling, secure in its character development and trusting the audience to join them. Go to Full Review

3/5
Peaky Blinders is an easy series to admire, as it's literate, great looking and great sounding (the Nick Cave soundtrack is sublime) yet I cannot like it, let alone love it. Go to Full Review
Christopher Hooton Independent (UK) 04/27/2016
With its billowing smokestacks, moody lighting and charred scenery, Peaky Blinders puts every penny it has to good use, and more than stands up when watched back to back with a Game of Thrones or a Mad Men. Go to Full Review
James Walton The Spectator 09/07/2018
A highly efficient piece of entertainment, full of inventive storytelling and heroically unafraid to go over the top when necessary - which is apparently quite often. Go to Full Review
Euan Ferguson Observer (UK) 01/23/2018
This terrific series has many strengths, not least the music, but one standout is the unflinching way in which it contrasts the worlds of power and money with the grubby, ripped fingernails of appalling violence necessary to achieve them. Go to Full Review

One thing Peaky Blinders does well is to keep several pots simmering... season 3 has done a remarkable job getting all those posts arranged and steaming away, while still giving the series and its characters a welcome sense of progression. Go to Full Review

Rex K. @RT61793587 Apr 28 More of the best show ever. Great action and a great story. See more Stephen O @RT84650450 Apr 19 A massive, visually stunning leap in scale that plunges Tommy into a dangerous web of Russian aristocrats and tests his psychological limits. See more DeClay T. @RT45021090 Apr 13 One of the greatest shows of all time. See more Torben E @Torben Apr 5 While being still extremely addictive and filled with fantastic acting, in my opinion the third season took a few wrong turns. The overall plot felt a bit to convoluted and far-fetched, especially the part with the Russians. The twenties were definitely a wild decade but its depiction in season 3 distracts too much from the main story line. Also, it hampers character development. (e.g. in Arthur's case). I guess, the series creators tried to raise the stakes even higher from season 2 but unfortunately it made things rather complicated than more suspenseful. Anyway, season 3 is still a strong contribution to the Peaky Blinders universe and it's definitely worth a watch, for the actors alone. Again, Cillian Murphy knocks it out of the park as Thomas Shelby while Helen McCrory's character is the most relatable and likeable. In many ways, this series is a true cinematic masterpiece; even with a far-fetched plot like in season 3. See more Marco L @decatur555 Mar 22 Peaky Blinders is one of the most stylish and fully realized crime dramas of recent years, but what makes it great is that the style is backed by real substance. The production design, music, camera work, and atmosphere turn Birmingham into a world that feels dirty, elegant, and dangerous at the same time. Cillian Murphy is phenomenal as Tommy Shelby, but the series also benefits from an exceptional ensemble cast that gives weight to every alliance, betrayal, and family conflict. Beyond the gangster story, it is also about ambition, trauma, class, politics, and survival. Sometimes it can feel a little too in love with its own mythology, but it never becomes empty. Sharp, intense, beautifully made, and led by one of the strongest performances on television.
