In my opinion, season 4 was the best. Cillian Murphy versus Adrien Brody, combined with a straightforward, compelling plot...that was a perfect cinematic experience. Unfortunately, season 5 deviated from that simple formula and so did the final season. Too many sub-plots that went nowhere, no brilliant adversary like Luca Changretta in season 4. In this season, the biggest enemy of Thomas Shelby is Thomas Shelby himself. That's usually interesting but not over the course of six seasons. Ultimately, I was hoping for a more surprising conclusion to this epic family-/crime-drama but I guess the producers wanted to play it safe. Probably understandable. But despite the above-mentioned weak points, I can definitely recommend the final season. This series had a great run, amazing actors, an unparalleled style and interesting characters. My only complaint would be the relationships that seem to take away from the tale, rather than add to it. And while Polly was the absolute best, I personally felt like the other female characters should have gotten their due respects, which I think were almost lacking. Their roles were integral to this family and the businesses, but I suppose back then women weren't ever appreciated or even acknowledged, most of the time. Anyway, I loved this show! The production design, music, camera work, and atmosphere turn Birmingham into a world that feels dirty, elegant, and dangerous at the same time. Cillian Murphy is phenomenal as Tommy Shelby, but the series also benefits from an exceptional ensemble cast that gives weight to every alliance, betrayal, and family conflict. Beyond the gangster story, it is also about ambition, trauma, class, politics, and survival. Sometimes it can feel a little too in love with its own mythology, but it never becomes empty.
