Critic Reviews for Peep Show Season 1
All Critics (8) | Top Critics (4) | Fresh (8) | Rotten (0)
Peep Show is a saga of extreme embarrassment, of excruciatingly intimate contact with the two misguided, mismatched, inept, dark, sleazy, twisted yet disturbingly appealing central characters.
The writing is top-notch, as are the performances from these two relatively unfamiliar faces and their supporting cast... You'll cringe, if you aren't laughing too hard.
Professional criticism of bleak comedy has a habit of finding something redemptive in this kind of mire: Perhaps failed love affirms friendship, or failed dreams provide a view of what's important.
Despite its focus on the two guys and their self-interested take on everything and everybody, Peep Show is generous with its comedy.
For all the absurd situations they manage to get into, the joy of the show is its moment-to-moment brilliance, the way in which an everyday situation will get turned into a piercingly funny revelation.
The funny views on relationships may or may not resonate with adult viewers' own experiences, but either way, they'll be laughing. But parents should definitely watch this one closely before giving teens the go-ahead.
It is an interesting concept and a unique spin on an ordinary premise, and the series manages to pull off the gimmick perfectly.
To say that it's iconic is an understatement.
Audience Reviews for Peep Show: Season 1

Jan 09, 2021I grew up watching Van Damme films and enjoyed them, but was never really entertained. This show is hands down entertaining. It plays with real human insecurities as well a stereotypes and leave the viewer wanting to see what happens next. The running jokes are never stale and I really wish there were more episodes.

Oct 24, 2020There is something alarmingly honest about this series that makes you watch it obsessively, without exactly understanding why. I especially enjoyed the actors, who are hilarious, but also refreshingly common. Not the kind of people you'd expect to see on a magazine cover, if you know what I mean.

Apr 10, 2020You really don't get much better than the awkward, gut wrenching yet utterly terrific world of Peep Show. An unglamorised tale of two thirty-something year old men who consistently fail to make any sort of normal relationship, platonic or romantic, with anybody who isn't fucking insane (e.g Super Hans).

Jan 30, 2020Cringe comedy at its best! Would totally recommend!
-
Aug 21, 2018So glad this is on Netflix. Along with Curb Your Enthusiasm, the best two shows ever.
-
Feb 17, 2018one of the funniest shows ever.
-
Aug 23, 2015Hilarious. Never a bored moment throughout the entire series. Unlike most British comedies, this does not have a strictly British feel so don't be deterred if you are not a fan of slapstick humor . . . this is entirely different.
-
Jul 04, 2014One of the funniest and most painful to watch shows. Basically a great TV version of The Odd Couple.
-
Feb 18, 2014One of Britain's best shows and right from season 1.
