Peep Show: Season 8 (2012)

Critic Consensus: Jeremy and Mark reach a place of relative hope in their lives and proceed to hilariously smash it all to pieces with their gallingly awful - and perversely relatable - decision making in the penultimate season of Peep Show.

The secret of Peep Show's longevity and consistently high quality is really rather simple: superb scripts delivered by a cracking cast.

On the surface, much had changed... Thankfully, this older, wiser Peep Show was a façade.

Its weirdly comforting having these spiteful, awful idiots back in one's life.

Sure, the now well-established face-to-camera and spoken thoughts schticks remain, and the characters are almost exactly the same, but the central duo of Mark and Jez are just as hilariously clueless as ever.

It may be series eight but the exploits of our odd couple are as beautifully imagined as ever.

The show goes on. And, as ever, writers Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain don't let a line of dialogue pass that doesn't deliver a joke.

Though this tale of two emotionally stunted flatmates isn't quite as snortworthy as it once was, it's gained a kind of pathos in its middle age, bound up with its lead duo's near-pathological inability to change.

As usual, the cringe-factor ratcheted up until Pompous and Punchable had each delivered a tour de force of squirm.

Peep Show has been one of the great comedy shows of recent times brilliantly written, bold, imaginative, original. But it hasn't moved on much in its eight series. Even the point-of-view and the listen-to-my thoughts things feel a bit tired.
