I was brought back to my first confrontations with racism, with having someone insist that I was somehow different or inferior.

Rarely has the maddening insecurities of being a teenager been so ably mocked but utterly understood with sympathy.

The staleness pervading PEN15 isn't because every situation and joke has been tapped before, better, elsewhere - this material has been strip-mined.
March 22, 2019
No one looks back on middle school thinking that they made amazing choices, but PEN15 packs a lot of funny into the idea that being a teen and having feelings is fine and important.

Millennial or not, viewers can come to PEN15 for the nostalgia of terrible haircuts, intricate note-passing and mix CDs and stay for the sweet story of two friends who - to paraphrase Britney Spears - are not girls, not yet women.
March 8, 2019
For all its rip-roaring daffiness, Pen15 is at its best when it's most lacerating.
March 6, 2019
The creators' commitment to their bit pays off, not merely with Y2K-era realism but emotionally, giving every humiliating moment a double edge.

It sounds gimmicky, but it works.

"Posh" gives teenagers-and former teenagers-a road map for a beautiful kind of reconciliation in the face of discrimination, and I think the world is truly better for its existence.

From the friendships worthy of matching jewelry to the awkward moments that warrant lengthy diary entries, every scene speaks to some universal prepubescent experience without ever coming across as cliché.
February 22, 2019
With a big heart, unapologetic zaniness, and a throbbing lady boner, PEN15 intrepidly explores the awkwardness, awfulness, and awesomeness of adolescence.
February 21, 2019
PEN15, like its name, is goofy and weird as hell. But that goofiness is almost a smokescreen...A darker show about '90s/early 2000s youth would, say, focus on the dangers of young girls developing attachments to strange men in the early days of AIM.
February 14, 2019
Women's experiences, especially in relation to their bodies, are so often ignored, hypersexualized, or misrepresented in media, but Pen15 does it right.
February 13, 2019
Erskine and Konkle slip effortlessly back into their younger skins, them and co-creator Sam Zvibleman evidently sharing very vivid emotional recall.
February 11, 2019
Suspension of disbelief is hardly needed, as PEN15 eloquently captures the zeitgeist of adolescence in the early 2000s.

It'll sneak up on you, this gem.
February 11, 2019
PEN15 turns out to be a lot more thoughtful than it's rather embarrassing, unnecessarily juvenile title.
February 11, 2019
To say it's as awkward as you expect would be disingenuous. It's much, much worse.

The Hulu series has a full, beating heart, and it's created and written by people who know we can still learn a lot about ourselves by looking back at who we used to be.
