Some of its mumbo jumbo may hurt your head, but the last words of Episode 2 are precisely on point. They whet the appetite for more, more. We'll see how it all comes out in the bloody wash.
Showtime subscribers have already put their money down, but many of them will probably decide that Penny Dreadful, while hardly dreadful, isn't worth it.
As creator John Logan moves away from the horror by the Thames and more toward the internal demons that haunt his protagonists, Penny veers toward the overwritten and overwrought. But by then, you may well be in for a pound.
For fans of expertly hammy acting and heated-up supernatural doings, it's a lot of fun.
If you enjoy the challenge of doing complex jigsaw puzzles in low light, Penny Dreadful will be your cup of tea.
This John Logan (Skyfall, Hugo) creation promises an intriguing summer pastime, for an eight-week run anyway.
Terrifying in its storytelling, beautiful in its portrayal, and intriguing in its premise, this show is a strong addition to Showtime's line up.
It's going to be a dark and messy business.
Still, for its faults, Penny Dreadful delivers some performances that are worth the price of admission.
We're interested enough to keep tuning in just to see if they can pull it off.
The Eva Green seance scene is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on a TV show.
Penny Dreadful stirs the characters of the iconic British horror novels of the 19th century into a shadowy world of vampires, witches, demons, and dark magic in Victorian London, a world both real and unreal.
Audience Reviews for Penny Dreadful: Season 1

Jan 31, 2021Nice and moody pastiche of every Victorian monster theme wrapped up in one show. I enjoyed every aspect of this luscious production except the Dorian Gray dalliances which were only added to have "homosexuality" in the show. All the other segments seemed to fit the story line except for Gray which did nothing whatever to advance the storyline and was only shoehorned in to give the leftist activists no excuse to attack the show.

Oct 01, 2019Penny Dreadful is easily in my top 5 favorite series of all time. Intelligent, chilling, with a unique beauty in its writing that's fueled by outstanding actors (Eva Green most notably), Penny Dreadful tugs on your heartstrings while you journey through its dark, supernatural plotline. This is one of the most beautiful works in TV of the century. If there is one series I urge you to get into before you die, it's this one

Sep 11, 2019Penny dreadful season 1 is unique and sometimes a little blunt with its horror and gothic ways but is beautiful shot and decent acting with a interesting story
-
May 14, 2019Dramatic and disturbing. Starts off slow but as the story grows and characters are introduced it sets off a chain reaction and the story and characters grow complex, darker and stranger and you get drawn into this world of fear and wonder of the unknown. Very intense and highly recommended
