When connected with it, the viewer finds a divertimento that catches and in which it is very complicated to get bored. [Full Review in Spanish]

Some of the problems of the first season still remain, but this is a marked improvement in nearly every category.

Things are about to get a lot worse on Penny Dreadful, and for viewers, that is a very good thing indeed.

There was no skimping on horror, or on glittering performances.

The second season's first two episodes have laid aside any doubt in my mind of a sophomore slump for this show. If anything, the return from hiatus has shifted "Penny Dreadful" into even higher gear.

These witches were definitely scarier than other versions we've seen lately. I'm not a fan of witches in general, but I think Penny Dreadful's take is really going to work for me.

"Fresh Hell" was a strong return to one of the most inventive and cleverly written shows on television or the internet.

Penny Dreadful is back to the business of raising goosebumps. And business is good.

This dark, complex drama about good, evil and the supernatural in late 19th-century London won't easily welcome newcomers at this point, but it should nicely satisfy those who hopped onto the ride last year.

It preys on your mind, giving you much to think about as it twists and turns its way down dark Victorian paths. It captures your heart. And, yes, it occasionally turns your stomach.

Such is the allure of Penny Dreadful, taking these familiar characters from legend-and in my case, a misspent youth obsessed with vintage horror movies-and investing them with unnerving yet ennobling humanity and dramatically compelling desires.

It's a gorgeous backdrop that's often a little short on canvas for the story it means to tell. But on the strength of its cast, the beauty of its design, and the sheer joy it gets from its homages, it's the sort of dreadful that's mostly a delight.

Poole is an intriguing evil, at the very least because she makes Logan's series into the rare female-led series not reliant on romance.

With a newly coronated arch-villain and compelling storylines for all the major characters, Penny Dreadful's second season promises to be just as viciously, vividly entertaining as its first.

Maintains the momentum of season one and nicely sets the stage for a host of new baddies.

It's overripe material that Penny Dreadful manages to render fresh with flash-freeze wit served hot.

Penny Dreadful cuts above the familiar creep-show clutter by being hyper-pop Grand Guignol with zeitgeist on the brain.

It somehow manages to be an escapist pleasure full of Dickensian interiors and lush paeans to pleasure and gore, and also a deliberately calibrated character drama, as well.

Given the appetite for the genre, a program that's simply unapologetic fun, as this is, can be plenty good, "Penny"-wise.

There's nothing quite like Penny on TV right now. Its wet-cobblestone horror and vintage gore paint a really majestic, scary portrait.
