Truth Be Told

Critics Consensus

Truth Be Told wants to be topically edgy, but only sends viewers on a bland descent into a world of unfunny and grating sitcom characters.

Critic Reviews for Truth Be Told Season 1

All Critics (32) | Top Critics (17)

Truth Be Told's problem is that it sells itself as a comedy that "goes there," but doesn't seem to be about much more than two dudes that don't really like their wives very much.

The characters have no character. They're bland mouthpieces for "edgy" standup shtick.

Sep 21, 2015 | Rating: D | Full Review…

The show wants to be edgy in the way that it addresses controversial topics - sex, race and politics - but it's merely irritating.

Black people and white people can be best friends, and that's the truth. Apparently, however, that friendship can't be funny, or so Truth Be Told (which formerly had the equally generic title People Are Talking) easily convinces us.

Truth Be Told has the herky-jerky rhythms of multicam, but it surprised me: It feels like it exists in the real world, or at least adjacent to a congenial version of it

The show's intentions are good and it's rooted in sweetness but without smarter jokes and more insightful observations, it will have trouble finding and keeping an audience.

No lie. This show about six friends is bad.

Sep 21, 2015 | Rating: 1/4 | Full Review…

Mark-Paul Gosselaar heads up this bland comedy about two couples who tend to analyze and obsess over everything, including topics such as sex, porn and race... Ugh. Sometimes the "Truth" hurts.

Sep 18, 2015 | Full Review…

This is yet another sitcom where nobody speaks like a human being but, instead, like a series of catchphrase-generating machines. Hard pass.

Sep 18, 2015 | Full Review…

The comedy drought continues with this awful sitcom. Truth be told, people will be talking about how bad this one is.

Audience Reviews for Truth Be Told: Season 1

This isn't the best show, but it made me laugh, a lot. And I will always remember the second episode, because after seeing the pilot and not loving it but seeing potential, I was so satisfied that the second episode was so great! I usually am let down when I see pilots of shows and see potential. I also have to point out that Mark-Paul Gosselaar gave a great performance! Tone Bell gave a pretty good performance, but had such great chemistry with Gosselaar that you don't care about how he is without him. This show reminds me of Dads in that it ends most episodes with a gut busting laugh! Even if the episode isn't that great, ending with a giant laugh saves it more often than not. It didn't have a "finale" per say, but the final episode was very good, and really ended the series without actually ending it with a clean cut, which makes it easy enough for them to continue if they don't get cancelled (because they haven't been officially cancelled, but it's pretty obvious it will be.) Reminded me of Rules of Engagement's finale.

Loved this cast and the writing was edgy pushing both sides of race, politics and sexes. Probably too smart of writing to capture a big audience.

Truth be told, NBC needs to cancel this show ASAP.
