Despite its sarcasm, the show has some heart to it.

People of Earth earns kudos for going for the stars, but it also suffers from a failure to launch.

People of Earth is worth watching. It's funny and weird and the acting is great. And I want to see it get more space to do all the things it's trying to accomplish.

In these uncertain, divisive times, People of Earth could be the ultimate bonding experience.

What's also notable about this comedy, which is more clever and thought-provoking than it is gut-busting, is its focus on the notion that there's something not quite right about our world and it's making some folks unstable.

The show has a solid amount of humor, but ultimately, comedy is a background tool for a show that deals with topics like trauma, empathy, and trust.

Both its humor and its more serious themes feel undernourished, and the end result is a comedy that, despite its potential, feels slight.

Initially silly, then sublime comedy explores meaning and connection. Even aliens are only human.

There are a lot of bells and whistles to People Of Earth, but at its core, it's a show about making first contact -- between humanity and extraterrestrials, and between humanity and itself.
