People of Earth earns kudos for going for the stars, but it also suffers from a failure to launch.

What's also notable about this comedy, which is more clever and thought-provoking than it is gut-busting, is its focus on the notion that there's something not quite right about our world and it's making some folks unstable.

The show has a solid amount of humor, but ultimately, comedy is a background tool for a show that deals with topics like trauma, empathy, and trust.

Both its humor and its more serious themes feel undernourished, and the end result is a comedy that, despite its potential, feels slight.

The TBS comedy has a fine cast and displays a wry and humane curiosity. As the aliens themselves will probably find out, it's not necessarily about the destination, it's about the journey, and the people you meet along the way.
