Critics Consensus

Perception's cast is game, but its implausible premise and thinly-sketched characters keep this police procedural from being truly memorable.

Tv Season Info

Dr. Daniel Pierce (Eric McCormack) is a neuroscience professor as well as a consultant for the FBI in this procedural crime drama series. He's also a paranoid schizophrenic who doesn't take his medication and feels his visions are clues that lead to solving complex cases. Daniel was recruited to the FBI by Kate Moretti (Rachael Leigh Cook), a former student who trusts his instincts unlike the other law-enforcement agents in her department. The dean of the college, Paul Haley (LeVar Burton), is a longtime friend of Daniel's who usually offers support but isn't beyond using his pal for what he feels is the good of the school. Daniel also employs the help of Max (Arjay Smith), his teaching assistant and live-in aid who tries to keep him focused.

Critic Reviews for Perception Season 1

I am inclined to root for McCormack... But no matter how much McCormack throws himself into his Perception role, balancing dramatic A Beautiful Mind-like heft with Monk-like humor, he's still driving a faulty vehicle.

People who like procedurals will enjoy playing along. But the real charm of the series is in its ensemble, especially the character of Daniel, enthusiastically played by McCormack.

Thanks largely to McCormack, but also to Cook and others, Perception is fun to watch.

Pay it no mind and you won't be missing all that much.

McCormack is terrific in Perception, which pushes him far beyond his sitcom to play a character who is not entirely likable...His show, on the other hand, isn't so terrific.

Perception is both clever and ridiculous -- but should do well for TNT because it's also familiar.

McCormack is in search of a role that suits him, and Pierce, as written, isn't it.

Oct 3, 2018 | Full Review…

Its focus on the challenges that come with living with a mental illness creates some sensitive moments. But the series also features plenty of sympathetic and lighthearted moments, too, thanks to Pierce's eccentric, but approachable, character.

The highest praise must be saved for McCormack, of course, as he proves to be more than capable of carrying the show as its anchor.

Oct 3, 2018 | Full Review…

The show isn't perfect and at times certain moments just felt too silly to be real, but the cast is amiable and the take different enough to be appealing.

Entertaining series. Shame it ended. Very 'sherlock holmes" in style.

aLTHO A ROTTEN WAS GIVEN THE AUDIENCE SCORE CLEARLY SAYS THEY LIKED IT.

Despite it being slightly ridiculously premised, and some of its characters being thinly-sketched, its a fun show. Eric McCormack is very talented, and the show has a strong supporting cast (even though LeVar Burton is criminally underused). Above all it is really fun to watch where the story goes.

The premiere season of TNT's Perception impresses with an interesting premise, great performances from its cast, especially McCormack, and great writing.
