What to Know

Critics Consensus

More cohesive and engaging than its woolly first installment, Perry Mason's sophomore season is a marked improvement driven by an urgent sense of purpose, with Matthew Rhys commandingly watchable as ever.

erry Mason is an underrated treat. Who needs dragons or potty-mouthed moguls when you’ve got compelling courtroom intrigue? Objection, your honour. Sustained. Go to Full Review

Perry Mason's heady evocations of time and place is like an intoxicating, bewitching brew. Go to Full Review

There’s still lots of moody music, endless melancholy gazing, and a drag to the dialogue that could lull you to sleep... And if you like this kind of thing, which I grew to do, well ring-a-ding-ding, sweetheart, let’s get dizzy with this dame. Go to Full Review

Perry Mason is a mirror. A reflection of a society unwilling to change. Gazing back at us from a hundred years ago, disappointed we didn’t do any better. Go to Full Review

A tighter, more focused second outing sees Erle Stanley Gardner’s pugnacious attorney in fine fettle aided, like in the first season, with glorious cinematography, period detail and acting Go to Full Review

Perry Mason just engages in weak, largely symbolic optimism–which tends to be what most people are criticizing when they mock the phrase woke, even if they can’t phrase it properly. Go to Full Review

Marco B @Mbhshs 04/15/2025 this second season works very well. much brighter than the first. the narration is paced and the twists well placed. the characters are all in the right gear. I discover with regret that there will not be a third season, what a shame. I hope for your return perry mason See more Paul S @PManRager 04/06/2025 I didn't find it as good as the first season, but it was still interesting to watch. They really expanded the scope of the story with this season, and there were a lot of twists and turns that made it really intriguing. I definitely recommend it for crime and drama fans! See more Corey W @RT31768611 07/21/2023 Infinitely better than its first installment, season 2 of Perry Mason sees the series finding its legs with an easier to follow and more believable case amid a pitch-perfect cast and some of the best period piece sets in television history. It's a real shame that HBO decided to spend such a large percentage of their budget on The Idol when a show of this caliber has finally arrived because this Matthew Rhys vehicle will likely not see a third season. With a cast including Chris Chalk, Juliet Rylance, and the legendary Shea Whigham, one can rest assured knowing that the performances did not lend themselves to the show's cancellation, rather it's much more likely about their tepid first season. While it was watchable, sometimes even enthralling, it was a bit of a messy journey with a conclusion that simply didn't satisfy considering the path we took to get there as viewers. This season learns every lesson that the first season let slip, but alas it seems too little too late for the legendary defense attorney in this iteration. See more Matthew C @RT92480507 07/20/2023 I really wish the series had more closely resembled the original. Instead, they kinda trojan horsed The Della Street Show inside Perry Mason. I liked how the original just stuck with the case and spent less time on the character's person lives. It was also funny how Perry Mason went from being a legal genius, who was always under control and one step ahead in court, to suddenly being this impulsive person, who doesn't think before doing. On the other hand, Della went from being the secretary to a legal genius, despite still being in the early stages of law school. Then, she takes over in court, because she'd better at questioning someone than the greatest court attorney of all time! Just didn't ring true. I did love Chris Chalk as Paul Drake. He brought a lot to that role, and Matthew Rhys was brilliant as usual. He and his character were just underused and misrepresented. See more Laura T @RT67886011 06/21/2023 Season Two of HBO's Perry Mason was a terrific, noir thriller with a great cast, engrossing plot (think LA Confidential twists), and exceptional production values. Season One's plot trended too macabre and over-the-top for my taste, but I liked the core characters. Season Two was a vast improvement and made better use of these engaging characters and the actors playing them. It is a travesty that HBO chose this moment to cancel the show, just when the series had found its brilliant stride. Can anyone else pick up this phenomenal show? See more Rick J @RT30593324 05/31/2023 Noir done true to its genre. Many attempt noir and fail, but PM walks the understated and stoic nature on noire, while keeping the audience interested. The great cast, art direction and direction, tackle the challenge and keep a down-and-out storyline fresh and compelling. This is a great series and I hope they pickup a 3rd season.
