For all its speculative storytelling, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams feels stuck in the past. It's philosophical, but lacking in subtlety.

It seemed dated and I found it hard to care much about anyone or the manufacture of the thought-blocking hoods.

... a cut-price version also of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror series...

Following Black Mirror with a show that absolutely would not exist had Black Mirror not turned out to be a monumental masterpiece is like asking a Kardashian sister to deliver a speech after Barack Obama.

While Electric Dreams is more diverse in tone and subject than Black Mirror's incessant nihilism, it struggles to maintain Charlie Brooker's timeliness with Dick's dated stories of androids and body snatchers.

"Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams" is, in a word, embarrassing. From the juvenile production values to the unabashed "Black Mirror" fanfic, the show is one of the worst high-profile television series I can recall.

This series has been a disappointment.

Dick didn't predict a future in which slow-burning TV dramas went on for years at their own glacial rhythm.

Most episodes lumber at a pace that would make snails blush as if creators thought the high concepts were enough to squeeze a full story from.

Electric Dreams is too content with what Dick already dreamt up.

But mostly, they play with familiar ideas in conventional high-tech settings: They're futures that seem oddly dated.

Unblemished happily-ever-afters are rare in this genre, of course, but even so, too many of these bleak Dreams are a few watts short of electrifying.

The main problem is that almost everything here, perhaps unavoidably, has a been-there, seen-that undercurrent to it.

Electric Dreams comes off as a sort of modern-day Twilight Zone, with not-so-very-special effects. I did like "The Hood Maker," "Safe and Sound" and "Human Is." But even these have twists too easy to predict.

The 10 episodes have a more positive outlook on the future of humanity than other shows. However, the writing does not live up to the same level as other shows of its ilk.

It's hit and miss for sure, but Dick's prolificacy as a writer means Hollywood can keep returning to this well for many more fascinating sci-fi setups for years to come.

Each episode is different, it's very much Amazon's answer to Black Mirror... I'm gonna add this to my list, but cautiously.

Where the Charlie Brooker series plays with technology and the use that humans give it, in Electric Dreams what's more important are emotions, desires and metaphysics. [Full Review in Spanish]

Whatever your desires, Amazon clearly hopes that they can provide the Philip K. Dick fantasy for you. If not, simply wait a few months. Judging from the last 30 years, there's more dreams to come.

The latest Philip K Dick adaptation is a beautifully austere meditation on the kind of question that might underpin a fairytale: is it better to live a happy dream or to see the world clearly?
