Critics Consensus

While Toni Collette heroically tries to bring Pieces of Her together, this lumbering mystery is too bogged down by backstory to satisfyingly cohere.

An immediately intriguing piece of work built on acts of political and family terror committed decades before the present day. Collette and Heathcote are both terrific in roles that contrast in some ways but echo each other in others. Go to Full Review

Toni Collette is central to both and is absolutely superb. Bella Heathcote is equally involved, and though her character has much less complex material to work with, she’s terrific too. Go to Full Review

The series coasts on several genuinely shocking and well-executed twists, which do indeed puncture the haze of passive-watching we’re so used to. And maybe that adrenaline hit is enough. Go to Full Review

On the face of it, it seems as though Collette as Laura is under-acting, portraying her character poorly, with not enough emotion. But really the opposite is true. Go to Full Review

I’ve read and enjoyed a couple of Slaughter’s books. If you have, you’ll know there’s, well, much muchness about them in their pile-on of twists and revelations. Pieces is a good representative... Go to Full Review

paul K @UncleToad Jun 3 This series starts off well, with a good cast. BUT there are constant flashbacks which mess up the narrative, so eventually you lose track of what is happening. ALSO the younger versions of the cast look nothing like their later versions, so you very quickly lose track of who is meant to be who. And there are too many characters anyway, so unless you follow very closely you easily become confused about what each character is doing or their motivation. The final episode, where everything is kind of resolved, is a bit 'meh'. And could have been stronger. To be honest, why didn't they make this as a film rather as a series? I think it would have worked better. See more Michael W @wexstasy Jan 10 I disagree with some of the reviews that say the plot lags, etc...etc. I think the narrative lean is a strength here. The problem IMHO is twofold: the casting of the main (younger) female lead is problematic - I've never seen a supermodel who is also a struggling 911 operator - have you? And also, she is depicted as rather inept/frantic. This also doesn't make sense - she is a 911 operator, trained to remain calm under pressure. These two pitfalls, while they may seem subsidiary, truly compromise what could otherwise be a compelling series. Frankly, I'm surprised by these rookie mistakes. See more Ian R @RT85181368 Oct 14 What started as a promising series soon dragged on into a laborious storyline. Toni Colette is always excellent but the writer made the story way too complicated and reflective. Eight episodes could have been halved to four and by the end we were thinking hurry up and get to the point of it all. Poor casting regarding age discrepancies and no attempt to even make the characters look similar with the constant flashbacks were annoying. Several unaswered questions of a plot with many holes in it. A shame as the actors had to work with what they were given. See more Andrea L @RT34274337 04/15/2025 Yes, Andy is annoying and yes, the plot is pretty unbelievable but the thing that bothers me the most is the casting. The actor who plays Nick looks way older than an undergrad. He could have played the older version. As for Jane, the actor who plays young Jane looks nothing like Toni Collette. Like another reviewer said she's like 2 feet shorter. See more Barry S @RT26452395 03/20/2025 What starts as an intriguing thriller , soon dilutes into a flash back heavy story line that not even the the strong acting performances can save. Drawn out , semi predictable show thats long in the tooth. If your searching for something new to watch, keep going. See more Alexis T @RT31572218 03/11/2025 Soooo good!! Ive waiting so long for more episodes!! Please! So creative and great acting!! See more Read all reviews
