Police Squad! — Season 1

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Wacky, inventive, and endlessly quotable, Police Squad! is a hysterically funny leap forward for TV comedy that was tragically ahead of its time.

Perhaps the best comparison is with an out-of-control roller coaster that breaks for commercials. Go to Full Review

Now Abrahams, Zucker and Zucker have taken aim at another seemingly unspoofable genre -- the television cop series -- with generally hilarious results. Go to Full Review

For those who have waited a quarter century to get even with Dragnet, this is it. Sight gags, puns, absurd non sequiturs. Go to Full Review

One big question is whether or not Nielsen has the seriocomic ability to float this series. On the basis of tonight's [premiere], the answer is no. Go to Full Review

Max W @MaxthorWoo Aug 26 The perfect vessel for nonsensical humor — presented as stand-alone vignettes with no narrative burden, offering pure gag-driven fun, with laughs that stand the test of time. See more Johnathon W @Hoppynsc Jul 16 Hilarious and far too short-lived TV show that went on to inspired the "Naked Gun" franchise. Leslie Nielson is brilliant as Det. Frank Drebin, delivering a deadpan performance in this police spoof, somehow keeping a straight face despite all the mayhem going on. Behind the camera, the Zucker Brothers deliver a brilliant spoof series, packing in so many sight gags and jokes in every episode it will take multiple viewings to catch them all. Just a brilliant series from beginning to end, even at just six episodes. See more Lloyd S @Lloyd93 May 14 Absolutely recommended. It was funny to watch. This is where the naked guy trilogy born. See more harrison r @emailaddress 09/19/2022 Nothing better. So funny. So much better than the Naked Gun trilogy. See more Adam H @Adm-supermarket 06/11/2022 This is a great series. I loved some of the repetitive bits ... the shoeshine guy, the lab, the celebrity assassination cold open. See more Jonathan K @NojEsco 01/15/2021 Police Squad is only 6 episodes long, but it is 6 episodes of continuous humor, and expertly-crafted humor at that. Leslie Nielson, previously only known for drama and thrillers, plays the main character perfectly BECAUSE he never once makes it look like he's telling a joke - He plays it 100% straight, as if he's completely unaware that there's something funny taking place, and it sells the humor more effectively. The comedy itself is largely either visual humor or somewhat low-brow humor, but there are sudden bits of legitimately high-brow wordplay and observational humor thrown in as well, preventing the show from being purely Stupid-But-Funny. You can get through all 6 episodes in the time it takes to watch most Summer Blockbusters, so if you're a fan of classic-era rapid-fire comedy, I cannot recommend this enough.
