Critic Consensus: "El Valero" is a strong, lively episode - brimming with clever action sequences, a witty score, and a slew of sly performances from its core cast.

Critic reviews for El Valero
Nearly everything that happens hints at greatness, or at least damn goodness, that goes frustratingly unrealized.
Fortunately this episode answers questions and doesn't raise new ones, so it's ahead of the game.
But "Preacher" is no ordinary Western, and "El Valero" becomes just as much about Jesse's guilt as him shooting off his attackers' penises.
I am aware Dominic Cooper has been praised by some and tolerated by others, but "El Valero" really goes out of its way to show all the different shades Cooper brings to the character of Jesse Custer
Feels mostly like a place-setting episode for both Jesse's story and his friends' plotline for the two hours remaining this season.
