Pride and Prejudice: Season 1 (1995)

Season 1
Pride and Prejudice

Critics Consensus

Colin Firth iconically smolders with agonizing Pride as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle embodies the tempestuous Prejudice of Elizabeth Bennet in this lovingly rendered - and arguably definitive -- adaptation of the Jane Austen classic.

The acting is uniformly flawless. Jennifer Ehle, a stage thespian with minimal film experience, is enchanting as Lizzie.

This reader will never again be able to open the pages of Pride and Prejudice without picturing the actors in this unforgettable television production.

It's distinguished by a beautifully crafted combination of elements, from the combustible chemistry between Ehle and Firth, to Davies' lively script, Simon Langton's fluid direction and Carl Davis's jauntily rippling score.

As agreeable a manner in which to pass 55 minutes as can be imagined, at least in polite society.

As far as TV adaptations of literary classics go, this is probably as good as it gets.

[Colin Firth's] Darcy, regal rigidity irresistibly crumpled at the feet of our zingy heroine, is the stuff of a girl's romantic dreams, right up there with horses and Paris in the spring.

At six hours, this BBC adaptation is a good deal more thorough than necessary... But Colin Firth is magnificent as her beau, haughty, mercurial Mr. Darcy. And there are flashes of Austen's heartbreakingly accurate wit.

Colin Firth is Mr Darcy -- cool, arrogant, cruel and a bit sexy. Yes, he takes an impromptu swim in his blouson and breeches and emerges, dripping, into the melting hearts of millions of sighing women.

A charming, literate series full of characters that are believable in the story's period setting, but which also have relevance in the modern world.

Apr 11, 2019 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

A show that fails to rise even to the height of expectations this soapy is a show in serious trouble, and when Elizabeth and Darcy are off the screen, there is not much else to entertain us.

Apr 11, 2019 | Full Review…

Watching the cast verbally spar with each other using Austen's savagely witty words offers an incredible showcase of the author's gift for language and satire.

Apr 11, 2019 | Full Review…

Deeply comforting on an aesthetic level. At six hours, it's the perfect length to occupy a rainy weekend or a day sick at home, and its narrative unfolds at a steady, inexorable pace, as gracefully as the formation dances in the ball scenes.

Audience Reviews for Pride and Prejudice: Season 1

  • Apr 01, 2019
Simply the best of many adaptations of one of the great works of English literature.

The best version of Pride and Prejudice there is!

While the arrival of wealthy gentlemen sends her marriage-minded mother into a frenzy, willful and opinionated Elizabeth Bennet matches wits with haughty Mr. Darcy. This co-production between the BBC and the American cable channel A&E is still considered by Jane Austen fans to be the definitive adaptation of Austen's most famous novel and her work in general. Colin Firth, who perfectly captured the character's aristocratic refinedness, his shyness and sense of decorum that come across as apparent stuffiness and disdain, and his underlying passion, all at the same time. He perfectly blends all these different traits and is utterly convincing in portraying the outward stiffness as a simple facade for the strong emotions and character underneath, rather than simply being stiff and wooden. His looks, and especially his eyes, say so much of the complexity of his character and his feelings with subtle expressions. Similarly Jennifer Ehle excellently portrays Lizzie, showing her to be tender, witty, thoughtful, occasionally prone to strong judgments without all the information, yet trying to grapple with different feelings as her involvement with Darcy. The others are great, too, but there is no point in listing them all. The bottom line is that I find it hard to beat this production, which is utterly gripping and keeps anyone interested in these stories completely entranced the whole way through.Doing justice to Jane Austen.

My absolute favourite! I’m surprised that there aren’t thousands of 5 star reviews on here the cast is perfection and their acting is amazing, mrs Bennett may come off as over the top but it still works. I like it much better than any other version you can’t help but become invested in the characters and in my brain that is a good story make.

This is the famous film about love story. The hero of this film is Mr. Darcy, the leading lady of this film is Elizabeth. She is the second daughter of Mr.Bennet. They meet each other at the ball. After an unexpected proposal, their relationship falls to zero. However , as the prejudice begins to melt, the accidental meeting at Pemberley, they both find admiration and appreciation within them. After a range of interesting trouble, the misunderstanding is final removed. I love Elizabeth because she is very brave and independent. She don’t afraid the pressure. I also love the idea of marriage: the sake of property and money, the marriage is wrong; but if the marriage didn’t take into account the above factors also stupid. Therefore I oppose the money for the purpose of marriage and also oppose the marriage lightly. The feeling of both men and women is as the cornerstone of the conclusion of the marriage ideal. In the film, society always takes great interest in individual’s issues. This film tells us nothing can come between true love.
