Colin Firth iconically smolders with agonizing Pride as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle embodies the tempestuous Prejudice of Elizabeth Bennet in this lovingly rendered - and arguably definitive -- adaptation of the Jane Austen classic.

Critic Reviews for Pride and Prejudice Season 1
All Critics (17) | Top Critics (9) | Fresh (15) | Rotten (2)
The acting is uniformly flawless. Jennifer Ehle, a stage thespian with minimal film experience, is enchanting as Lizzie.
[Colin Firth's] Darcy, regal rigidity irresistibly crumpled at the feet of our zingy heroine, is the stuff of a girl's romantic dreams, right up there with horses and Paris in the spring.
As far as TV adaptations of literary classics go, this is probably as good as it gets.
As agreeable a manner in which to pass 55 minutes as can be imagined, at least in polite society.
It's distinguished by a beautifully crafted combination of elements, from the combustible chemistry between Ehle and Firth, to Davies' lively script, Simon Langton's fluid direction and Carl Davis's jauntily rippling score.
This reader will never again be able to open the pages of Pride and Prejudice without picturing the actors in this unforgettable television production.
At six hours, this BBC adaptation is a good deal more thorough than necessary... But Colin Firth is magnificent as her beau, haughty, mercurial Mr. Darcy. And there are flashes of Austen's heartbreakingly accurate wit.
A show that fails to rise even to the height of expectations this soapy is a show in serious trouble, and when Elizabeth and Darcy are off the screen, there is not much else to entertain us.
A charming, literate series full of characters that are believable in the story's period setting, but which also have relevance in the modern world.
Colin Firth is Mr Darcy -- cool, arrogant, cruel and a bit sexy. Yes, he takes an impromptu swim in his blouson and breeches and emerges, dripping, into the melting hearts of millions of sighing women.
Deeply comforting on an aesthetic level. At six hours, it's the perfect length to occupy a rainy weekend or a day sick at home, and its narrative unfolds at a steady, inexorable pace, as gracefully as the formation dances in the ball scenes.
It would be hard to find a more pleasant way to spend an afternoon than with the BBC's production of Pride and Prejudice.

Mar 09, 2019While the arrival of wealthy gentlemen sends her marriage-minded mother into a frenzy, willful and opinionated Elizabeth Bennet matches wits with haughty Mr. Darcy. This co-production between the BBC and the American cable channel A&E is still considered by Jane Austen fans to be the definitive adaptation of Austen's most famous novel and her work in general. Colin Firth, who perfectly captured the character's aristocratic refinedness, his shyness and sense of decorum that come across as apparent stuffiness and disdain, and his underlying passion, all at the same time. He perfectly blends all these different traits and is utterly convincing in portraying the outward stiffness as a simple facade for the strong emotions and character underneath, rather than simply being stiff and wooden. His looks, and especially his eyes, say so much of the complexity of his character and his feelings with subtle expressions. Similarly Jennifer Ehle excellently portrays Lizzie, showing her to be tender, witty, thoughtful, occasionally prone to strong judgments without all the information, yet trying to grapple with different feelings as her involvement with Darcy. The others are great, too, but there is no point in listing them all. The bottom line is that I find it hard to beat this production, which is utterly gripping and keeps anyone interested in these stories completely entranced the whole way through.Doing justice to Jane Austen.
