Critics Consensus

A mediocre Grey's Anatomy spinoff, Private Practice borrows heavily from other, better medical dramedies, often coming off forced or overly wacky.

Tv Season Info

In the first seriesof this "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off, ob-gyn and neonatal surgeon Addison (Kate Walsh) leaves Seattle Grace Hospital and heads to California to work alongside two of her old friends, exes Naomi (Audra McDonald) and Sam (Taye Diggs), at Oceanside Wellness Center, a co-op private practice. Their reunion is a happy one, but Naomi and Sam didn't tell the other doctors in the co-op -- Pete (Tim Daly), Violet (Amy Brenneman) and Cooper (Paul Adelstein) -- that they were hiring Addison, so tension develops. Before long, Addison and Pete get on each other's nerves and then develop a mutual attraction; and pals Violet and Cooper embark on a friends-with-benefits relationship.

It's clear there is still work to be done in defining the characters and setting an overall tone.

Feb 4, 2020 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

The patients' stories are more interesting than the cooked-up relationships between the doctors, and that's a malady that may be hard to cure.

Feb 4, 2020 | Full Review…

The worst thing about Private Practice is that it officially marks the loss of the Addison we knew and liked.

Sep 26, 2007 | Full Review…

The worst part is what continues to be done to Addison in the misguided quest to make her more deserving of her own show.

Prognosis for Private Practice: good.

The talented cast isn't quite as successful in getting past the shortcomings of a teleplay that's typically light on believability and heavy on the outrageous.

Feb 3, 2020 | Full Review…

"Private Practice" is hugely disappointing.

Feb 4, 2020 | Full Review…

If you're wrapped up in the soap opera aspect of "Grey's Anatomy," you'll find more of the same in "Private Practice." However, without the hard-hitting and gritty medical drama sidestories, it is nothing more than a soap opera.

Private Practice has legs because it is kind.

Feb 4, 2020 | Full Review…

After persevering with this inexcusable waste of potential, I have figured our precisely why my medical insurance premiums are so ridiculously high. It's because doctors are idiots. It must be true: it's on TV.

Feb 4, 2020 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

It's not bad, but it's not real good. And it lacks whatever magic "Grey's Anatomy" has.

Feb 4, 2020 | Full Review…

Rimes' compulsion to tie things in too neatly to personal issues... further overdramatizes what could have been a potentially engaging show.
