As this doesn't take itself seriously, it's hard to know why we should, and the result is plain hammy. In fact, as ham these days is 82 per cent injected water, this may even be more hammy than actual ham. Yes, I'm pretty sure it is.

Deliciously camp.

Much cleverer than it pretends to be. Which isn't very.

Fortunately Payne can sparkle to order, and Sheen makes the simple greeting "My boy!" drip with malice, glee, neediness and guile.

It's fine. It's fine. The enclosing bowl is a solid, formulaic one, perfectly fit for purpose.

This is an instantly addictive show, dominated by the blackly comic Sheen but also sprinkled with delicious character roles, not least Bellamy Young.

It is ludicrous, but there's sufficient sadism, psychobabble and Sheen to keep you distracted from the odd confusing plotline.

It's all a little overheated and fancy for my taste - one of those shows, like "Hannibal," where murder is practiced as an art, with an eye to composition and subtext.

Like most network television premieres this fall season Prodigal Son pilot feels not quite ready for primetime.

"Prodigal Son" isn't going to set ratings charts on fire, but it's a solid mystery/drama after a long Monday, one that plays on our increasing obsession with serial killers and grisly murders with an engaging, talented ensemble.

The Fox show is full of quippy lines, serial killers, and plenty of childhood trauma. But it gets its spirit from Lou Diamond Phillips and the makeshift family his character creates.

The genius-madman routine is tiresome, but the cast - including Bellamy Young ("Scandal") as Martin's wife and Malcolm's mother -- gives it all they've got.

Dark drama has OK plot, weak characters, lots of violence.

Sheen seems to be having an especially good time in his deliciously menacing role.

"Silent Night" deserves lumps of coal in its stocking.

Thanks in large part to the cast and some slightly obvious but well-executed twists, the pilot was a helluva fun ride. The question, of course, is how Prodigal Son will maintain this momentum over the course of the season.

Prodigal Son is a sinister, slick, and sometimes silly serial killer saga punctuated by a fun Michael Sheen performance.

Sometimes a series tries to be too many things at once, but even though Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 1 juggled a lot, the series may pull it off. It's dark, twisted, horrific, and fun.

You have, at least from what I've seen, real possiblities for a really good time in a very dark underbelly or gallows humor galore.

Some tonal tweaks could turn this eagerly outrageous crime drama into something enjoyably out there, but for now, it's just the craziest "Silence of the Lambs" knock-off yet.
