Season 1
Pure

Critics Consensus

Pure sidesteps the seedy pratfalls of its ribald premise to instead compassionately explore the complications of compulsion, shame, and struggling to make sense of oneself.

Critic Reviews for Pure Season 1

All Critics (13) | Top Critics (6)

Part of a growing canon of struggling-urban-millennial comedies, Pure is a warm-hearted but unsentimental portrait of a 24 year old trying to overcome her fears of what kind of person she might be.

Yet [Pure] is clever, witty and, oddly given the content, sometimes rather innocent and charming.

Feb 4, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It's funny, grotesque and disorientating. And, in 30 minutes, it removes as much stigma as it does clothing.

Feb 4, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

There is something missing: there are no standout laughs or particularly moving moments of emotion, so this first episode doesn't quite captivate.

Pure deals in extremes, but it is for anyone who at one time or another hasn't felt in control of their brain, and has experienced the awful fear, demoralisation, despair and loneliness that comes with it.

The series also manages to drill deep into the matter of mental health and the difficulty of finding help and understanding.

It wants to tackle a thorny hard-to-tackle issue. But Pure is a drama without thorns. It's too pure for its own good.

Charly Clive as Marnie is wonderful - surely an instant hit - with her perfect(ly fake) Scots accent and dry jibes, but so far this straddles an uneasy chasm between wryness and horror, and threatens to unseat both pegs.

There are small tragedies and farcical scenarios aplenty, but they all add up to a funny, frank and non-exploitative portrayal of an inner world that's permanently on high alert.

Feb 4, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

In the wrong clammy hands, Pure could be an exploitative horror show, yet instead of a grubby lurk around the runnels of somebody's XXX-rated fantasies, it feels fresh, funny and deeply empathetic.

Feb 4, 2019 | Full Review…

Pure confronts mental health issues and sexual taboos bravely and its cast is excellent.

Feb 4, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Pure's writing is accessible and entertaining, nimble enough to move between real-feeling desperation and self-aware laughs. It's quite a feat.
