Pure Genius: Season 1 (2016 - 2017)

Critic Consensus: Pure Genius is weighed down by stereotypical doctor drama trappings, suffocating its chances of bringing anything compelling and entertaining to the genre.

Tv Season Info

The medical drama "Pure Genius" follows the inner life of Bunker Hill, a private hospital where a team of doctors strive for innovation and medical breakthroughs. James Bell (Augustus Prew) is a billionaire with a rare and fatal disease who has become devoted to helping people like himself, so he decides to build and fund his own hospital. He hires doctors and researchers who he believes can help with his mission. Among them: genius surgeon Dr. Walter Wallace (Dermot Mulroney); pessimistic Dr. Zoe Brockett (Odette Annable); neurosurgeon Dr. Talaikha Channarayapatra (Reshma Shetty); altruistic Dr. Malik Verlaine (Aaron Jennings); neurologist Dr. Scott Strauss (Ward Horton); and 3-D printing expert Angie Cheng (Brenda Strong). During the first season, the team deal with risky pregnancies, terminal cancer patients, multiple organ transplants, remote surgeries and James' own disease.

I have no idea what happened in the making of Pure Genius, but it is impossible to tell that Katims was involved, on the level of performance or intelligence.

he script is assembled from cliches, some so hokey the actors seem to have trouble keeping straight faces. The plot rarely holds together, and the technology is more new age (a real-life "Vulcan mind meld"?) than cutting age.

If only a generation gap was the biggest issue facing the characters on CBS' new medical drama Pure Genius.

Marred by the usual hospital prime-time melodramatics, Pure Genius is still a compelling idea matched to a superior cast.

Here's to its long-term ratings health as a medical series that, unlike Code Black, has an overall calming effect.

This medical drama is absurd in every possible way, but the fake medical devices and treatments it comes up with are amusing enough to give the proceedings some zing.

At this point, it would take a true genius to revolutionize and refresh TV's medical genre, and this flat-lining series couldn't fall farther from that mark.

Whenever Bell pressed an index finger to his lips shortly before dispensing some medical wisdom about which he has no medical training to draw upon, I wanted to slap his hand from his mouth and say, "Scram, jerk!"

By relying on the predictable emotional manipulation that accompanies life-threatening situations to deliver its drama, the series is forgoing the opportunity to build characters with personalities and in turn pull real emotion from them.

"Pure Genius" contains a message that still needs to be smoothed out.
