Quantum Leap: Season 1 (2022)

Season 1
Quantum Leap

Critics Consensus

This more serialized reboot of Quantum Leap has enough heart to merit a look from viewers with the luxury of time, but it often forgets to have fun with the episodic structure that made the original a classic.

Great show, everything I've been waiting for with the sequel! Addison is phenomenal and Ben is great too. Excited to see where this season goes! It's a must watch

Oh Boy! A new chapter in the legacy of Quantum Leap. Intriguing mystery with connections to the past series.

Wow amazing first episode! This show has everything! Fantastic characters and cast! Because of the idea behind the show the episode possibilities are endless! There is obviously a big budget because the production was awesome! They've scored acting veteran Ernie Hudson who brings a certain amount of class to the series! Really looking forward to more episodes!

I thought the pilot episode was good. It is getting review bombed by critics and audience members alike just because it doesn't have Bakula or Stockwell, but it does have Bellisario. I am interested it watching it for what it is, not hating it for what it isn't. I prefer it as a continuation vs a reboot, and so far I am entertained.

Maybe it gets better after the first episode, but I won't find out because I won't be watching. Maybe it'll de better in about 20 years when non binary people are excepted more. Personally I can't get past trying to figure out if he's a he or a she. I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND ANY OF THAT STUFF! There are men and women, that's it! If you feel you need more attention, find a different way to do it and stop throwing your crap in everybody's face!

Unfortunately the actors on this reboot aren't even half as good as those in the original, and I'm not talking just the main two but across the board. And as far as plot moves way too quickly, not nearly enough time spent on character building so none of their decisions end up making much sense.

I became a massive fan of the original Quantum Leap in high school so when I heard they were bringing it back I was very excited. I just watched episode 1 and am disappointed but optimistic. I like that it is doing something different rather than just imitating the original show, I like that there is a mystery as to why Ben leaped and that he doesn't remember, and I like that the lore and canon of the original series is important to the new series plot. I didn't like how it brushed past Ben's story for the episode, which I would argue is the most important aspect of the show, to move the series arc forwards in the present. I also didn't like how we spent so much time in the present. Seeing everything that is happening in 2022 takes all the mystery and tension out of the episode. If it were me we would never see the present day and just get small snippets through Addison's commentary. Speaking of Addison, she felt more like the main character than Ben did. Whenever we were with Ben, she was there too. He never got any time by himself which never gave his character an opportunity to react naturally to the situation around him. I also feel like Addison's character is not the right one to be guiding Ben. Her character is so serious. Their views are fully aligned, based on the fact they're in a relationship, which leaves no room for banter or teasing between the two of them. I feel like Ian would've been more fun to hang out with than Addison so we could have the playful banter that made the original series so fun. The music was also really generic and made everything feel more forced than it did emotional. Many scene's would have worked better if it just wasn't there. I also felt zero connection to the guy Ben was supposed to save. His character felt 2 dimensional and his story felt rushed, probably due to the 2022 scenes. The 1985 scenario also didn't make me think or learn. The original show was all about trying to find the good in people, no matter their walk of life or exploring fascinating facets of life through a historical lens. This show feels like it forgot to do that and just used a generic action plot to have something to pad out the season arc. HOWEVER These are all problems with potential to heal and evolve over time. I hope the series grows into a better show that knows how to balance its episodic plots with a long series arc in a fun, mysterious and insightful way.

I'll give this a couple more episodes but I have reservations.

I turned this off after ten minutes. The acting is poor, the casting was awful. The use of camera shots to portray action is hokey, trying too hard. I was a huge fan of the original series, which was just plain good storytelling. This new version had a built in fan base and prequel to the story. But it failed to capture the feel of the original. Life is too short to waste on bad storytelling. If you can't grab me in the first ten minutes, off it goes.

I went into watching the new Quantum Leap with a very biased opinion based upon the fact that the original was one of my favorite shows as a kid...after watching the premier however, I'm very impressed. They kept the spirit of the original intact while updating it for a modern audience. The pilot starts out as a slow burn but definitely gets better, and it has multiple nods to its predecessor. Now I will say this, I can already tell that it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But I do suggest if you were a fan of the original, give this one a chance. Don't base your entire opinion on the pilot episode
