Quarry: Season 1 (2016)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Quarry's distinctive setting and intriguing characters are just enough to offset a bleak narrative that struggles to make consistently compelling use of its assets.

Critic Reviews for Quarry Season 1

It's a show that opens the dark corners of crime and, like Quarry, we have little idea of what might come at us as the series unfolds.

Quite simply, it's the best production design work since Mad Men ended, and fittingly realized by veteran TV director Greg Yaitanes.

Sun, when the opening scene to a tv series is the main character coming to on a shore, finding his gun, then merkin'some dude we don't even know. while dude was restin' on a tree. YOU. KNOW. ITS. BOUT. TO. BE. FLAMES.

It's gritty, intense and engaging.

This is a thoroughly gripping show that hooks you in from the start, with skilful storytelling. It's the best thing I've seen in a long time and I've got high hopes for it.

Mac's complicated past and present leave him haunted and restless, and Marshall-Green has a low-key charisma that fits Mac's sensibilities perfectly as a flawed anti-hero that's worth rooting for.

Quarry wriggles out of the clichés that would typically come with a period drama set in 1972.

Quarry instead comes to life as soon as you turn it on, with a heartbreaking sense of soul, a strong ear for dialogue and an array of supporting players who lend the show an impressive degree of grit, gallows humor and suspense.

For fans of pulpy crime thrillers, Cinemax's Quarry will likely scratch the itch left by Banshee's departure.

Quarry has a great deal working in its favor, especially when it comes to the gorgeous depiction of '70s-era Memphis.

Audience Reviews for Quarry: Season 1

Such a rich mix of storytelling, characters and great actors. Unbelievable that Cinemax canceled it.

season satu udah kelar, nungguin season 2 lamaaa bedd!!

Memphis, Tennessee, 1972. Mac Conway and his friend Arthur have just returned home after serving in Vietnam. They reconnect with their families and try to find jobs. However, work is hard to come by for Vietnam vets. Conway gets contacted by a man known simply as The Broker. He recruits hitmen for assignments and believes that Conway would be ideal for this sort of work. Conway is reluctant, but is drawn in once he discovers that Arthur has already accepted a similar offer from The Broker. The Broker gives Conway a code name - Quarry. Interesting, gritty, intriguing series. Wasn't always that way though, taking several episodes to find its focus and rhythm. While the first few episodes of any new series are always scene-setting, the scene initially being set wasn't very engaging. There was enough intrigue to keep you coming back, but there was a good chance that you could give up at any time (and I came close on more than one occasion). Then, from a point, it suddenly got quite interesting and engaging. The plot found direction and Conway's character became someone to root for. What followed were some great, gritty episodes, filled with action, plot development and character development. Looking forward to Season 2.

Awesome. One of the best of these 5 last years. Great pic, great actors, great filming, perfect managing of music and... great story!

and my new show intriguing cast great music unique setting of post vietnam in the south pulp crime with a twist or thirteen good stuff so far

One of the greatest shows I´ve ever seen. It´s way up there with the first season of True Detective. Loved it.

Season 1 of Quarry left us wanting a season 2 in double quick time....a superbly acted crime series, some fantastic characters and a storyline that has unlimited scope for future seasons...make this happen....Please!

I Dig Quarry Based loosely on Max Allan Collins pulp character, Quarry removes the black humour of the novels and replaces it with traumatised angst of our Viet vet, home and killing it. The amoral sensibility of the books is still there, but there is a brooding intelligence to the whole shebang. Collins wanted to go one further than 'Richard Stark (Donald Westlake), but what he really does is more Jim Thompson. Our hero is 'hollowed out' like a Quarry, but on the rampage none the less. For those who don't know, Quarry is a hitman contracted by the mysterious 'Broker' . The novels are great, but the TV series injects a lot more 'meaning', most of which works a treat. The cast is uniformly excellent, the early 70's setting in Memphis is unique, and the scripts and direction are excellent. This is one violent show, but I predict it will run for some time. Almost perfect.

Cinemax continues to kill it with another fantastic show about past regrets that effect our characters into the future with some great performances and a very highly tension filled story that includes some of the most stunning action scenes i've seen on TV all year that also has some very memorable and effective performances and great direction but includes many subplots that aren't exactly as interesting as the show presents them to be and some the show struggles to find what to do with especially with a shorter episode length. However it ends in one of the most satisfying season finales i've seen all year that has me very interested in what a Season 2 could like while also simultaneously makes me feel completely okay if this is it for the show. Overall Grade of the Season: 4.5/5 or an A

Neither the writers, director or actors understand the Viet Nam era. This is a waste of time!
