Something in Queen America that kept me watching despite all that. Call it apathy or curiosity or a side-effect of being trained in the high art of marathoning T.V., but I zipped through all six episodes with a decent degree of satisfaction.

Queen America's flaws are many, but as it proceeds it gets less performatively sardonic and more empathetic toward its characters, delving into the various issues that have led them to pursue pageants with such intensity.

Most of the narrative is as predictable as it is sedentary. The only surprise in the first three episodes comes from a wonky structure that makes you wait longer than necessary for the first pageant, only to be disappointed in how speedily it's over.

Stream it, especially if you're a Zeta-Jones fan. But be ready for a very uneven show that might take a few episodes to get going.

Still, there's a watchable spark in Zeta-Jones and something admirable in the respect that Queen America shows to Samantha, who's played by Shouse with just the right mix of naïveté, charm, and self-awareness.

In its own way, "Queen America" is a beaut.

In the grand scheme, Queen America pales in comparison to its forerunners. That doesn't mean it's a waste of time, though. And who knows, maybe it has a few surprises up its sleeve down the road.

There's a potentially good show somewhere in Queen America, but the show is fighting with itself.

In the series, a black comedy (or is it a drama with occasional jokes?) about the desperate hangers-on in the beauty pageant scene, Zeta-Jones feels constrained by the show's sensibility and its sour lack of ambition.
