Queen America's flaws are many, but as it proceeds it gets less performatively sardonic and more empathetic toward its characters, delving into the various issues that have led them to pursue pageants with such intensity.

Most of the narrative is as predictable as it is sedentary. The only surprise in the first three episodes comes from a wonky structure that makes you wait longer than necessary for the first pageant, only to be disappointed in how speedily it's over.

Still, there's a watchable spark in Zeta-Jones and something admirable in the respect that Queen America shows to Samantha, who's played by Shouse with just the right mix of naïveté, charm, and self-awareness.

In the series, a black comedy (or is it a drama with occasional jokes?) about the desperate hangers-on in the beauty pageant scene, Zeta-Jones feels constrained by the show's sensibility and its sour lack of ambition.
