What to Know

Critics Consensus

Authentically brutal with pinpricks of humor that's all the more true to life, Rain Dogs is a bracing story of toil that proves to be immensely rewarding.

This is no wholesome family show, but it’s all about family nonetheless. And it’s a ripper. Go to Full Review

The London-set tragicomedy about a struggling single mom is less a plea for sympathy than a showcase for flawed humanity and (occasionally outrageous) gallows humor. Go to Full Review

Cooper is a masterly actress, and her technique of gazing askance at her situation, which she always does so well, creates the mystery that drives this all forwards. Go to Full Review

With its marginalized characters and its criticism of post-Brexit British society, the miniseries created by Cash Carraway is reminiscent of Ken Loach's cinema – if it were more inventive and provocative. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Rain Dogs is unapologetic about the necessity of Costello living her life as she is. It’s a bitter medicine that’s not for everyone. Go to Full Review

Rain Dogs wants to be I May Destroy You, also on HBO. But just sharing some similar plot elements doesn’t put it in the same league as Michaela Coel’s unnervingly original series. Go to Full Review

Dena M 03/17/2024 I loved this show and all of the characters! I love how I haven’t quite figured everything out, and I feel that the story hasn’t quite been told. I would love to see another season! See more Honest D 02/29/2024 At first I thought of this show as a British Shameless. And there are some similarities. But by the beginning of the 3rd episode that comparison was completely erased in my mind. This show is great. It gets dark at times. Well, most of the show. Somehow for as heavy as a lot of the subject matter it has a quite a few really touching moments. Make no mistake though, these are some pretty regular damaged people who are doing what regular damaged people do for and to eachother. I imagine there are some who would be uncomfortable with a lot of it. They are missing the point and always will. It is a great show and it is as real as it gets. I love it. See more B G 09/16/2023 This is a well written and brilliantly acted story that follows the lives of the two main characters, Costello and Selby, who are both doing their best to love and raise Iris, Costello's young daughter, despite both limping along with their own complex PTSD. Costello is a writer who wants to achieve success, despite the roadblock that is her intersectional place in society. Selby is an elite-born, flamboyant, yet broken man with a violent streak that landed him in jail. Their love of Iris and their desire to not fuck up her childhood is their North Star…. See more McFluffy 05/31/2023 The cast is brilliant and the English dichotomy of socioeconomic classes was spot on however, the plot or there lack of, left much to be desired. It was just as torturous watching talented actors waste their time and energy on this show as were the relationships in the series. The plot never really picked up and went nowhere fast. The sudden transition to the country with no explanation as to how a new job was obtained, how they got there and set up their new lifestyle. It just transitioned from let's go to we've been here awhile living the good life. Deeply flawed editing or writing. The superfluous violence between a toxic friendship was difficult as a viewer to watch as there was no reward for it, no purpose nor real context. This unlikely pair seemed over-the-top and ludicrous at times. See more J E 04/29/2023 I really enjoyed this. It's about real life; personal problems, relationships and how our past can affect our whole lives if not dealt with. All the cast are great and I especially liked Jack Farthing as Selby. See more Annabel H 04/13/2023 Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Daisy May Cooper exceptional as always and the rest of the cast were all sensational. The storyline sent you on a roller coaster of laughter, sadness and heartache. I loved it… her best yet ! See more Read all reviews
