Ravenswood: Season 1 (2013 - 2014)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Darker than expected from a Pretty Little Liars spin-off, Ravenswood legitimately elicits chills and surprises with an attractive young cast.

Tv Season Info

On the first and only season of this "Pretty Little Liars" spin-off, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) leaves Rosewood and heads to Ravenswood to help his girlfriend. On the bus ride into town, he meets Miranda (Nicole Gale Anderson), who's searching for her uncle (Steven Cabral), a funeral director and her last remaining relative. When Caleb finds a tombstone bearing his name and likeness, he decides to stay in town to get to the bottom of things. He soon meets Remy (Britne Oldford), a girl who knows a lot about the town's history, and twins Olivia (Merritt Patterson) and Luke (Brett Dier), who are searching for their father's killer. These five teens come to realize that they're linked by Ravenswood's deadly curse and must research the town's past in order to save themselves.

The clunky exposition in the premiere episode leaves viewers uncertain where to turn. Too many of us will decide it's not worth trying to follow.

If the characters can stay alive, viewers should enjoy the show.

It's all cheesy and silly with minimally adequate performances but, eh, what do you expect from a show in this genre.

Ultimately, Ravenswood is a sufficiently spooky tale - and you don't have to be a Pretty Little Liars fan to enjoy the hair-raising series.

The group of teenagers may have been left sinking, but based on the creeptastic premiere, I'm sensing Ravenswood will be swimming strongly right along with its sister series.

It's definitely less grounded in reality, and clearly intended as more of a horror story than a murder mystery like [Pretty Little Liars]. As a huge horror fan, I'm very much down with that.

Ravenswood, at least in pilot form, is dreadfully dreary.

It's pretty ballsy to kill off one of your main characters in the first episode. We actually find that fairly awesome.

I think the different storylines separating the characters will provide a lot of material. I liked the characters and found them intriguing.

Where PLL is soapy and audacious, Ravenswood (in its pilot, at least) seems warmed over, like an American Horror Story: Juniors.
