What to Know

Critics Consensus

Achieving true grit thanks to Richard Rankin's ruggedly authentic rendition of Rebus, this modernized take on the literary detective is compulsively watchable entertainment.

John Hannah and Ken Stott played Rebus in earlier series, and both have their charms, but Mr. Rankin is one of those unorthodox casting choices that works. Go to Full Review

So far so familiar. But if Rebus is much less risk-averse than the novels, with its reliance on formulas, then it does at least flesh out the usual blueprint with local detail. Go to Full Review

Rebus is a big name in fictional detectives, but this show makes a point of not pulling its punches for the ease of the casual viewer. Go to Full Review

The essentials of Rebus haven’t been airbrushed out of existence. Here is a bruised, compromised man, complete with stubble, dry-as-dust cynical humour and a penchant for the wind-up. Go to Full Review

Rankin is terrific. Terrifically morose and misanthropic, that is. Go to Full Review

I like this new model Rebus, as played by Richard Rankin. His Rebus is every big brother that ever slagged you affectionately, but he can also be a rotten so-and-so. Go to Full Review

John M @Mack33 Aug 5 Just when character development was getting strong, the season ends. A bit too much back and forth with the ex. Needs more action in the story line. See more Paul D @LVHothead 11/16/2024 This is a very good series. Richard Raskin is much different from Ken Stott, but he’s great in the role. I also liked Rebus’ partner and ex-wife, too. This series reminded me of “Crime”, starring Dougray Scott. See more Ze F @Coisa 09/09/2024 It comes out of nowhere and ends up dragging the audience along with unimportant dialogue in uninteresting scenes. You've probably seen millions of series like this and there are many others out there, this is one of the worst examples of the style. Don't waste your time. See more Jessica - @RT64312967 07/21/2024 The casting was great. Rankin is a sympathetic and handsome lead. I like the fact that none of the main characters are without fault and all have their vices. I was sucked into the story and watched the whole season over a number of days. The only bits of criticism are: As the gangsters were introduced only briefly, it was a bit confusing who was who and what their names were. It would be better to give them more introduction in the beginning. I would also love to see more background on Rebus, his family, the main police colleagues and the gangsters to give them well-rounded personalities. And lastly, more iconic shots of Edinburgh, please! See more Andrei D @RT74856639 07/14/2024 Mostly formulaic but it has moments See more DahmHenderson T @RT25696519 07/04/2024 Very good series with a likable lead. The best lines in the show though are given to Ger Cafferty See more Read all reviews
