Rectify: Season 1 Reviews

September 18, 2013
It's those supporting characters that make Rectify worth watching.

It is numbing in the opposite way of a show like The Following. In its painterly human drama it forgets that subtlety is not the same thing as suspense.
April 23, 2013
Like Sundance's other recent dramas, Restless and Top of the Lake, Rectify moves at its own pace -- and offers its own rewards.

That story is so powerful all by itself that I'm looking forward to seeing the show explore it at length, at its own pace, taking time without seeming to take time.
April 22, 2013
The subject matter is heavy, but the episodes are beautifully written and move at a contemplative, but never boring, pace.
April 22, 2013
The greatest thing about Sundance's haunting, transporting Rectify is that it's willing to be timeless, and to take its time. It's pokey, atmospheric, and the opposite of plot-driven. And it's one of the best things I expect to see on TV all year.

Those six episodes are well worth watching. Maybe McKinnon can rectify the plot issue in a second season.

The cast is stellar, you can almost feel the Georgia heat

Rectify would be lost in transition without Young's stellar work in the lead role. It's a fearless, fully immersed, Emmy caliber performance tinged with sadness, searching, primitive pleasures and even a little comedy.

the main focus of Rectify stays on the most interesting material - on what it means for a person to find himself with a future, after having written himself off as a dead man walking.
April 21, 2013
It resembles nothing so much as a bad indie film, the kind of slow and tepid bummer that used to fill Sundance's late nights and afternoons when it was a full-time movie channel.
April 21, 2013
If Rectify was winnowed down to the length of a feature film and shown at a festival, we could better judge whether or not it accomplishes what it set out to do. Delivered this way, as a meandering, weekly TV show, it has spread itself too thin.

Takes time to get into, but once in, you're in.

With the aid of a well-cast lead in Aden Young, Rectify avoids predictability and makes a familiar story seem new.
April 19, 2013
A portrait of a family grappling with a returned son who is now a stranger and the gloriously rich and careful study of how endurance and faith, strength and surrender.balance to form the essential nature of humanity.
April 19, 2013
Moody, dark yet at times poetic, this is TV made in the indie-film style, without pretense.
April 18, 2013
Rectify is an ambitious and eloquent series, vivid in its portraiture of family and local citizens who don't know quite what to make of Daniel (a proclivity the film seems to share)-assurance enough of an engrossing six hours.
April 16, 2013
Rectify [is] a series with a strong indie-film sensibility and slow-as-molasses, hypnotic pace. It represent[s] the sort of quality that can put a network on the media's radar, buoyed as it is by Aden Young's wonderfully stoic performance.
April 15, 2013
The series has a cinematic feel, with plenty of stand-alone, poignant moments punctuating each episode.

The scattered parts equal much more than the sum.
