Rectify: Season 2 Reviews

February 17, 2016
Rectify is leisured and sullen and contemplative, like Don Draper if his identity crisis were set in the present-day South.

Creator Ray McKinnon crafted something truly original a year ago, and he appears to have done it again a year later.

Rectify isn't a whodunit, and that frees it up to explore all kinds of big questions about redemption, forgiveness, the double-edged sword that is freedom, the reach of maternal love, the subjectivities of time, and the purpose of religious belief.

We're often accustomed to programs that leap forward through large chunks of time but Rectify is a methodical piece about conversations and moments more than a sprawling narrative.

Few shows are so grounded. And, if you have a little patience, few shows are so worth watching.

The show that returns tonight is better than ever; its slowness and care strike me as even more distinctive and refreshing than they were a year ago.

An extremely ungenerous feeling came over me as I watched the first three episodes of the second. It was that itch of impatience you get when you would like someone to get over something horrible already, but only because you, anyway, are exhausted by it.

Rectify sees every character's point of view and seems to feel for them while reserving judgment on their actions, and their justifications for those actions. It seems to see through the visible world, past time and flesh. It's truly Christian art.

The joy of last season's discovery has given way to a hope that Rectify's continued strong performances won't be snuffed out by a steady downbeat of characters' lives further unraveling.

It's a quiet, deliberate show, but it contains multitudes and a willingness to go for broke with religious symbolism or Southern gothic overtones, right smack dab in the middle of stories about normal people going about their lives.

Rectify is the rare TV drama that favors understatement and an unhurried pace. It's the anti-Scandal.

It doesn't matter how slowly it takes to tell this story -- it remains as riveting and unique as ever.
June 16, 2014
The little series that could, Rectify is such a wispy construct, where events unfold so languidly, it's a puzzle why the hours fly by and prove consistently compelling.

If it's action you seek, Rectify is a poor choice. But for fine cinematography, great acting and probing character development, you'll want to tune in.
