Critics Consensus

Red Oaks offers an affectionate nod to 1980s sex comedies that -- largely thanks to a talented ensemble cast -- finds fresh humor in its familiar premise.

Critic Reviews for Red Oaks Season 1

All Critics (39) | Top Critics (21)

The show is full of hearty laughs and nostalgic vibes. The stellar cast includes Jennifer Grey, Paul Reiser and Richard Kind.

A less manic "Caddyshack," this cinematic coming-of-age comedy with surprising heart follows college student David Myers (Craig Roberts)... One quibble: The ensemble cast is so uniformly strong that David is a bit too bland.

May 15, 2019 | Full Review…

The central story works quite well; Roberts is excellent, and Reiser gives his character some real depth. Where Red Oaks frays is around the edges, as it presses to add more laughs to remind us that we're watching a comedy.

There are increasingly diminishing returns when it comes to watching a 20-year-old navigate between the push of his own desires and the pull of others' expectations, and David Myers... is too passive and inert to root for.

It's not merely an experiment in nostalgia. The characterization and crisp writing have a biting comic edge, keeping the story from sinking into sentimental mush.

This is a likable ensemble, filled with talented young future stars (Roberts and Turshen especially) and great veterans who don't get enough work, like Reiser and Kind.

In the end, Red Oaks depends so much on paying tribute to '80s films that it forgets to do much of anything else. If its particular brand of Caddyshack-meets-John-Hughes nostalgia isn't up your alley, Red Oaks doesn't work too hard to win you over.

May 15, 2019 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

It has a grace and gentility to it that kept me invested. Based on Cooper's charms and an interesting setting, despite too many well-worn 80s visual cliches, I'm into it.

May 15, 2019 | Full Review…

The references to the '80s -- such as the amazing aerobic outfits -- are a little kitschy, but it's mostly acceptable because the people and stories feel sincere.

May 15, 2019 | Rating: 8/10 | Full Review…

Red Oaks is a stellar blend of workplace and relationship comedy smashed together with in-the-moment family drama, and it's all anchored by a stellar cast.

This is a gem of a series that I luckily came across. It reminded me of 'The Wonder Years', but 'Red Oaks' is a lot more funnier!

Takes me back to my 80's suburb upbringing...

I had to find out about this show through a friend surprised that the reviews are not higher. In my opinion this show should have a rating of 90%+. Underrated*

    Excellent show, binge-watchable.
  • Nov 05, 2015
A simple comedy with a setting that will more than make up for the lack of more complex concepts.

I found this on RT's "The Best New TV Shows of Fall 2015 (And Where to Catch Up Right Now)" List and I'm so glad that I did. I got a feeling of Freaks and Geeks or My So-Called Life from this , they copied these but just that the characters and emotions feel as authentic as these shows. As an article in Bustle said "While comedies with clearer punchlines may get more viewers initially, subtle sitcoms based in genuine emotion tend to have a longer staying power. " I hope thats true for Read Oaks as well. I'd be really devastated if Amazon decides not to bring it back for a 2nd Season
