Rick and Morty: Season 1 (2013 - 2014)

Season 1
Rick and Morty

Critics Consensus

Rick and Morty zaps onto screens and makes an instant impression with its vivid splashes of color, improvisational voice acting, and densely-plotted science fiction escapades -- bringing a surprising amount of heart to a cosmically heartless premise.

Critic Reviews for Rick and Morty Season 1

Harmon and Roiland want to deny us all of our comfortable psychosocial poles by forcing us to reside, as viewers, in the same sort of ambiguous head-space the Internet and popular culture forces us to reside in anyway.

On a pure episode-to-episode level, few shows can match the intricate plot machinations that send its two heroes to strange new corners of distant planets and suburbia alike.

Rick and Morty... works because the writers' free associations are unexpected but somehow logical.

It has transformed into not only one of the sharpest, most surreal, nerdy comedies on television, but also a treatise on storytelling and world-building.

This show is amazing. I have never laughed so hard in my life as I have while watching this show.

Weird it does indeed get, and weird I hope it shall stay. This show could be a top-rate crossover hit.

Rick and Morty is, eight times in ten, a black-hearted grotesquery... And after 11 episodes, I am more invested in its world and characters than any adult comedy of the last few years.

Feb 14, 2019 | Full Review…

Between the earnestness of the characters and how lovingly detailed the expansive universe is, this show watches as a multi-episode ode to pop culture itself. Yet it never crosses into meta territory.

Feb 14, 2019 | Full Review…

A bonkers adventure through space and time that has as much delightfully crude humor as you would expect from an Adult Swim series, but at least twice as much heart.

Feb 14, 2019 | Full Review…

I would not recommend watching it while eating, but beyond that I've been enjoying it tremendously so far for its imagination, for its emotional/philosophical consistency, for the excellent voice work,, and for the balls-out comedy of it.

Feb 13, 2019 | Full Review…

Each and every episode is the funniest thing you've ever seen and also the smartest and also the darkest and also the weirdest. And that's what science fiction at its best truly is.

Feb 13, 2019 | Full Review…

There's a hint of Futurama here, but it's a darker and far more foul world, much to our enjoyment.

Audience Reviews for Rick and Morty: Season 1

    original and enjoyable

Season 1 was amazing. It springs onto the scene, becoming instantly the thing we never knew we needed. Its edgy humor, crass lines, painful truths and pure enjoyment to watch was, and is, incredible.

After I first started watching this show I was in shock that such a great show existed. All of my existential dread, general sardonic outlook, pent up passion and rage, tragic disillusionment yet idealism about everything, ironic superiority complex, and weakness for potty humor COME TO LIFE in a funny show that almost never fails to entertain and amaze me! I love how it's a watch-in-order thing, but each episode is also self-contained in some way and lightly based around a classic movie. Sometimes certain wall-breaks can be a tad annoying—I was a bit annoyed with season 3–but overall quite wunderbar. I like rewatching episodes and noticing new details.

Rick and Morty is smart, funny with a big universe and one of the best animations of Adult swim.
  • Jul 12, 2020
Yes. Just yes. Dark humor, mad scientist Rick, and his Sherlock and Watson relationship with his grandson Morty. This show portrays the universe as dark and meaningless, but also shows that there are gleams of happiness when there is companionship and rapport. I love how random and weird each episode is, as if a bunch of creative crazies just got together and drunkenly rambled off a plot.
