Season four of Rick and Morty can, so far, be best summarised with the (truly complimentary in this rare instance) phrase "more of the same."

It's a bleak beginning to the season, and really, if you're looking for a sign of how Rick and Morty has changed in the last two years, there is the brutal reality that fascism has become "the default" for most of the multiverse.

It's not necessarily new ground, but even without the aid of a future-predicting crystal, there's still a sense that the show is seeing itself through new eyes

The wait has been long and fans have been patient, but the season 4 premiere of Rick and Morty is everything fans will have been hoping for and more.

The episode's cold open smashes the reset button with remarkable efficacy.

Still, the main feeling I got from the premiere was the intense thrill of a series launching toward a new era at the peak of its powers.

That banter -- mirroring the premiere endings of every other season of Rick & Morty -- serves as a hard reset for the rest of the season, if not the remainder of the 70-episode order the series has gotten.

The season 4 premiere is as smart and funny as anything the show has done before, and it paves the way for a confident future - even if it's just basically more of the same.

As a meta-statement, it's certainly a bold opening to the season. And considering how much the premiere squeezed into its 20 minute runtime, I can't wait to see how things pan out. Rick and Morty's back, and it's different, kind of.

[It] is not just a "classic Rick and Morty adventure" with a twist, but also a funny commentary on the pressure felt by the show's creators to appeal to their rabid fan base while also having the freedom to venture into new and exciting creative territory

Rick and Morty is ultimately an optimistic, hopeful series, however, precisely the kind of medicine the audience needs.

"Rick and Morty" remains smart, ridiculous and singular. What started as a raunchy parody of "Back to the Future" on LSD has morphed into a show that can and will do absolutely anything in the name of comedy.

It's good storytelling, good comedy, and, yes, good TV.

It's still one of the best-written and most entertaining shows on television, one that remains incredibly smart, funny, and insightful. And it might be all of those things because how long they take to make it.

They're not all magically transformed into better, more independent people, but over the course of the episode it's clear that Summer, Beth, Morty, and even Jerry have realized they don't necessarily need Rick.

This episode doesn't beat viewers over the head with its message, but it does embrace that message and a newfound sense of optimism.

The show is well aware of the complaints it's gotten from all sides, but it isn't going to be swayed from its mission, and it's going to do what it wants.

Great art takes time, and at least based on its first episode, Rick and Morty Season 4 is great art.
December 1, 2019
But if "Edge of Morty" is any indication, the show's creative braintrust still has plenty left in the tank.

It's been a long wait for new episodes of Rick and Morty but following this delightfully crazy premiere, it's fair to say that not only is the show as good as ever but that this could be the most enjoyable season to date.
