Rick and Morty: Season 5 (2021)

Season 5
Rick and Morty

Critics Consensus

Bold, bombastic, and just the right amount of baffling, Rick and Morty's fifth season is an action-packed journey that may finally put Rick in his place.

The Last Episode was Amazing, but that was about it for this season.

The first season of Rick and Morty that felt like a chore to watch. Really disappointed to see the creators forget that the point of the show was to be funny.

First episode was great second was ok last three where godly 4-7 pretty bad to Rick to morty standards but the other Episodes make up for it.

I watched every episode as it came out. My first concluding impression, was that this is horrible, and I gave it the lowest rating here with a long criticising review. But I was wrong. If you're feeling disappointed, and think this season wasn't that great, I have a recommendation, and perhaps a remedy. Watch all the episodes again in reverse order, but like this: 9>10>8>7>6>5>4>3>2>1. Uncensored, if you saw the censored versions. Another tip, pause and rewind if you didn't catch something. Somehow this makes it magically all better, for our kind. If anyone working on Rick and Morty reads this, keep up the good work, the underappreciated hard work, whatever you're doing I'm convinced is completely true to the show and your intentions, the series just takes a few rewatches to see it. I apologise on behalf of everyone else unreasonably raging.

[⭐️67%] Rick and Morty has always pushed the boundaries to see how far they can go in terms of dark humour which has always been met with positive feedback, however in its fifth season, the show goes too far in one episode in particular, which allowed for the shows worst episode. As well as that infamous episode, Rick and Morty Season 5 is riddled with inconsistencies, which is unfamiliar for this show. At times it drives to fit in a lot of references into its episodes plot which makes it frustrating and dull to watch. The season started and ending strong, delivering some of the shows best episodes, but the majority of the episodes in the middle are some of the worst the show has seen. However like most seasons, it executes a great finale, which answers questions from previous seasons as well as setting up more for the future.

(all seasons) Harmon and Roiland have created a bunch of great characters and a fun, memorable universe of nutty sci-fi extravaganza, gore, sex jokes, burps and swearing. Somewhere in between all those, though, they do find time for emotional resonance and satire, which is remarkable. And now time for quite possibly the dumbest critique of this show... The surprise, novelty factor wanes a bit after a while: so many outrageous things happen early on that it kind of becomes routine pretty soon.

After a slightly underwhelming fourth season, Rick and Morty returns to a quality that recalls its earlier years, giving fans an action-packed fifth season that also features a finale that's simply shocking in its revelations! While most of this season finds the show sticking to its guns, Harmon and Roiland up the viscera 10-fold. From an episode involving an invasion of giant sperm, to a ludicrously violent Thanksgiving episode, Rick and Morty's writers push the limits of small-screen animation this year (both in content and production values), but as aforementioned, the real reward comes at the finale. It's been apparent that the show's creators have had a bigger picture in mind for the relationship between the two titular characters than they've made apparent, and the finale does indeed bestow several intriguing new layers to it. The internet has already exploded with fan theories, and while we'll just have to wait at least another year for more answers, it's lucid that Rick and Morty's future has just become infinitely more fascinating!

Often times when a great, inspired show comes back to capitalize on a second round of popularity it has no gas left in the tank. This is not the case with Rick and Morty. Season 5 is filled with a continuation of laughs and multiverse humor. The guest spots are great. This show has sustained great humor. I kind of feel like it is meant to be watched under the influence but there is something foe those of us that watch it clean and sober. Rick is still "Very Rick" and that is the key to keeping this fun.

Honestly, it's not that bad of a season. It started off strong, with the first 3 episodes being pretty good. But, it hit a sort of mid season slump, with episodes 4-7. However, the season ended strong with the last 3 episodes, really emphasizing Rick's backstory and exploring his unhealthy relationship with Morty.

Most of the season just felt like spoofs of 90's pop culture, and most of the fun to be had with this season for me was seeing if I could recognize what show they were spoofing in the episode. I really miss the originality of previous Rick and Morty seasons. Some of the episodes really felt like it had no context at all, it was just someone picking a random 90's or older show and seeing how they could take the mickey out of it.
