Riviera: Season 1 Reviews

Despite its pompous overcoat, Riviera has started out as a deceivingly brisk thriller which certainly holds promise.

Riviera has the feel of a slick international production, with various actors from various countries playing various roles that only sometimes appear to be in the same series.

Though most characters remain thin, the performances are pleasant at worst -- Stiles is good with her character in states of stress, if less convincing in the quieter moments; one never buys her as an art expert.

The dialogue is more Crossroads motel than le Carre...If the sunshine can blind you to that, it's warming up to be nicely ridiculous and trashy, like Footballers' Wives with the odd glimpse of an old master.

There are twists, there are turns. There is a sleek visual sensibility and a pretty dang resplendent setting.

Riviera isn't high art, and doesn't pretend to be. It's slick, glamorous, fast-paced, precision-tooled entertainment: brain-candy of the purest grade, and I gobbled it up.

There's nothing radical or challenging about Riviera: It efficiently combines elements of soap operas, murder mysteries and thrillers, and, as the frosting on top, it gives viewers a peek at the luxurious lives of the oligarch-adjacent global elite.

It's already a holiday for the eyes. Now it just needs to transport our imaginations, too.

Laughably implausible as her character may be, Stiles is on form here and it's her presence, along with the stupefying magnificence of the Mediterranean, which makes Riviera perfectly diverting fluff.

Life doesn't imitate art, though, as Woody Allen said; it imitates bad television. Thankfully, Riviera, with its world of wealth and image, is quite good television, and very far removed from life as we know it.
