Rizzoli & Isles

Critics Consensus

Based on Tess Gerritsen's novels, Rizzoli & Isles is about as dog-eared as a paperback mystery, filled with standard characters and clichés.

Critic Reviews for Rizzoli & Isles Season 1

All Critics (18) | Top Critics (13)

You cannot even call Rizzoli & Isles run of the mill, it being that mills usually run more smoothly.

Jul 12, 2010 | Full Review…

Rizzoli & Isles features a good dose of humor and a lean style of storytelling that's reflected in the fairly small core group with which we will apparently be working.

Jul 12, 2010 | Full Review…

The writing is sharp.

Jul 12, 2010 | Rating: B- | Full Review…

Attempts at levity aren't working at all.

Oct 3, 2018 | Full Review…

The crime-driven material is familiar and, because of the book condensing, hurried and mystery-free, while at least in the early going, attempts at levity aren't working at all.

Sep 19, 2013 | Full Review…

It's a compelling enough tale, with Harmon projecting just the right amount of fear and defiance and Isles a complementary mixture of comfort and good sense.

Sep 19, 2013 | Full Review…

Rizzoli & Isles is kind of a mess of a show. There are interesting elements around the edges, but the writing is just dire.

Sep 19, 2013 | Rating: D+ | Full Review…

The suspense in the more violent scenes works nicely as we're only given glimpses of the crimes being committed.

Oct 3, 2018 | Full Review…

Chazz Palminteri is inexplicably on the show as Rizzoli's father, and he seems to be channeling Christopher Walken's corpse for the role.

Jun 19, 2018 | Full Review…

Wow. The new series Rizzoli & Isles isn't just bad, it's really bad.

Jul 12, 2010 | Full Review…

We might at least hope that the women at its center reshape the assumptions... and the cliches.

Jul 12, 2010 | Rating: 6/10 | Full Review…

"R&I" isn't any fluffy, girl power, shoot 'em up, but a gritty and occasionally gruesome drama that delves into the unpleasant side of humanity while keeping suspense and surprises alive.

Audience Reviews for Rizzoli & Isles: Season 1

  • Jun 25, 2020
Based on the Tess Gerritsen book series, Rizzoli & Isles is an exciting, female lead police drama from TNT. The show follows a Boston homicide detective and a medical examiner who work together to solve crimes. Angie Harmon (Rizzoli) and Sasha Alexander (Isles) lead the cast and have good chemistry together; however the Isles character seems a bit like a Dr. Brennan knockoff from Bones (being over literal and socially awkward). Also, there's a bit of gender politics being played, though nothing too heavy handed. Still, the writers do a pretty good job at creating interesting cases-of-the-week and at mixing in a little comedy to lighten the tone. There are also some impressive guest stars featured, including Michael Massee, Billy Burke, Donnie Wahlberg, and Brian Dennehy. It's not the most original police drama, but Rizzoli & Isles delivers a solid first season that shows a lot of promise.

Rizzoli & Isles is terribly unfaithful to forensic methods and science, but unbearably faithful to cliches and unoriginal standards.
