In fifth-century Ireland, a young prince named Conor is thrust into the role of leading a group of rebels against the invading Romans after most of his family is massacred. First, however, Conor faces the daunting task of uniting all the warring Celtic tribes. Helping him are his mentor, Fergus; Tully, an apprentice magician; and Caitlin, a runaway slave. Their chief foe is Longinus, a sorcerer who is actually a 400-year-old centurion who is under a curse for piercing the side of Christ with his spear. His lover is Diana, the power-hungry Roman queen.

Critics Consensus

While it has action and style to spare, Roar ultimately succumbs to a lack of heart and originality.

''Roar'' is like ''Hercules'' without the camp humor, or ''Braveheart'' without the big-budget action. What's left is a hopeless mix of earnest content and cheesy trappings. Go to Full Review

Essentially what you have is a bunch of silly-billies running around in funny clothes bashing and thrashing and smashing. Go to Full Review

The result is a TV show that looks great - all dark green forests and deep blue skies - but if it wants to distinguish itself from its genre, it has to get a lot more moodily grim. Go to Full Review

All the episodes have an element of magical realism, science fiction or the surreal, and all are in the same literal vein, which becomes extremely tedious after a while. Go to Full Review

Some of the dialogue is a little hard to keep down, but it's a forgivable sin considering the meaty-handed demands of the genre. Go to Full Review
