A half-century of American music, politics and pop culture as seen in the pages of Rolling Stone magazine is chronicled in this two-part, four-hour documentary. Founded in 1967 in San Francisco by Jann Wenner, the magazine became a cultural beacon that helped shape America and defined generations, always understanding that rock 'n' roll was more than simply music. The documentary features performances by an eclectic mix of artists, including The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin and The Clash, and spotlights the magazine's impact by showcasing many groundbreaking stories of its writers. There are also previously unheard audio recordings, interviews, and rare photos and footage. Actor Jeff Daniels narrates.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Stories from the Edge has all the gloss and appealingly assembled collage of a thoroughly thumbed-through magazine, but its hagiographic treatment of Rolling Stone makes for a deflating and shallow feature on a cultural institution that could have benefited from an unbiased editor.

Wenner is an executive producer of this documentary, so it's a bit of a puff piece on the magazine, and how much you enjoy it will depend on how interested you are in rock music and the magazine itself. Go to Full Review

It's the story of a still-often-great institution overwhelmed by its own claims to historical greatness. Go to Full Review
