It all comes together to make this a fine comedy in parts, even good, at times, and it's a relief, in many ways, that it doesn't try to be more.

I think they've done a great job reviving the show without forfeiting its original appeal, which is no easy feat.

Roseanne hugs her and growls, warmly, "loser," a touching example of the show's knack for being mean and loving at once, but it's Darlene's tears that are the heart of the scene, and the revival.

When it premiered, Roseanne broke new ground. This time around, it's good, but nowhere near required viewing.

It's really, really important to watch the revived Roseanne. The nine-episode reboot is not some phony, retro exercise. It's a strange, vital and brazen thing to behold. And it aims to make the viewer uncomfortable.

Roseanne is a revival that's willing to grapple with the time that's passed rather than deny it. It's feisty and funny and a little sad. And like that old couch you can't throw out, it may just have a good year or two left in it.

Roseanne crashes into the 21st century, with predictably rushed results.

Roseanne was groundbreaking in the late '80s and most of the '90s, but it feels more necessary now than it did then. The scripts may make political points here and there, but Roseanne is still a comedy about a family -- a family of individuals.

They're on the nose. They're reductive. They're easy. They conflate partisanship with politics writ large. They suggest an American political situation that is a matter of performance and personality rather than of systemic crisis.

Unfortunately, the revived series is a bit rough around the edges. Not in terms of its humor or content, which are remarkably well-adapted for a modern audience, but in terms of its pure execution.
March 22, 2018
It's a layered depiction of the ways in which politics divide families-not just by disagreement, but by a divisive rhetorical style that's become ubiquitous in American life.

Roseanne offers proof that the old-fashioned approach still works. The Conners' old couch looks mighty inviting.
March 21, 2018
I've been covering this industry since Roseanne was on the air, and I don't recall anyone clamoring for its return... the premiere episode tries too hard to hit too many topical targets in 22 minutes. It's all over the map, failing to distinguish itself.

Sporting a fresh layer of relevance, ABC's groundbreaking sitcom Roseanne makes an engaging return to life next week with its superb original cast.

The 10th season of Roseanne has put itself squarely in the camp of revivals that have no trouble justifying their purpose in 2018.

Is this Roseanne revival necessary? Probably not. But it's still real nice to have the Conners back.

It's still a series about family and love and acceptance, and if you're looking for familiar faces and easy watching, Roseanne will probably satisfy. For those looking for something sharper, ABC has plenty of other family comedies to choose from.
