Roswell, New Mexico: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Roswell, New Mexico

Critics Consensus

Roswell, New Mexico admirably adds modern political context to its premise, but this reboot hews too closely to its predecessor to transcend the pitfalls of a redundant retread.

Critic Reviews for Roswell, New Mexico Season 1

All Critics (20) | Top Critics (5)

If you don't like CW shows but you like The X-Files and other alien shows and you're wondering if this will be up your alley, it probably won't be. But if you like a good CW sci-fi drama, this is a good bet to add to your list.

Roswell, New Mexico has a few surprising twists on the formula, yet never completely finds a worthwhile voice of its own. It's not bad. It's flimsy and resistant to its own strengths.

Even for the now-twentysomethings Max Evans (Nathan Parsons, an Originals alum) and Liz Ortecho (Jeanine Mason, the season-five winner of So You Think You Can Dance), that's a tall order, one that the series as a whole struggles to deliver.

As a reboot, the series creates a unique space for itself. And as a representation of Latinx on the CW it's unparalleled.

Sometimes the aliens-as-immigrants rhetoric is a little too on the nose...but as remakes go, this iteration of Roswell seems like it will appeal to the current CW audience.

Aliens of all kinds in worthy update of '90s cult fave.

the chemistry between the actors on Roswell, New Mexico is intense and exceptional, and it elevates the pilot from great to excellent.

Jan 17, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

This grown-up Roswell has its moments but mostly reminds us how hard it is to recapture the magic of an original.

Jan 17, 2019 | Full Review…

"She can never know what happened to Rosa," Max says ominously at the end of the first episode, but the new Roswell is so boring I doubt you'll care.

Jan 16, 2019 | Rating: 5.9/10 | Full Review…

Besides just the general problem with this kind of love story, Max's obsession with Liz just isn't as cute at nearly-30-years-old as it is in teen form.

Jan 16, 2019 | Full Review…

The strong choices generally work for me, and I can see a certain fear over their "controversial" nature, but I worry that Roswell is still too close to the original.

Until we see further episodes that stray from the original, or maybe hue closer to the Roswell High book series, it's really hard to figure out if this is worthwhile or not.

Fun characters and fun story. Not great, but a well done show. Cant wait for season 2.

Absolutely terrible in every way from story lines to acting to political correctness gone mad, then add in gay men 😝 just because. After finished puking with this crap another terrible remake of original great series, who thing just cring worthy.

This show is very boring. You'd expect cool action and sci-fi things happening, but it seems to just be a drama show. The plot is very meh.

I enjoyed the original show and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this reboot. I have tried to watch some of the others they have tried, like Charmed and the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but couldn't get into them, that's not to say they aren't good but to me they don't hold a candle to the originals. That could be because I was more invested in the shows they are based on than I had been in the first Roswell, but it's my opinion that out of the ones I have seen in this genre, Roswell New Mexico did the best job bringing the original concept into a new era. A feat it managed to do without loosing what made the show interesting in the first place and while nicely maintaining the original premise. Furthermore it actually manages to stand on its own as an enjoyable entertaining show in its own right. It doesn't need to be held up by the success of its predecessor, which might have helped it start out but I am confident it can succeed on its own. I'm actually surprised to say I enjoy it more than the original, which is rarely the case in my experience. I'm looking forward to future seasons, of which I hope there will be many.

This is a great show and I love how it brings up real atrocities that are happening today. I love that it has space for Latinx, homosexual & bisexual, and mixed minorities of or the current world. Your doing a great job would love to see 7+ seasons!!!

Political garbage masquerading as a television show. Why did they have to ruin such a good show?
  • Dec 03, 2019
It immediately (5+ immigration/Wall references in under 5min) took a turn to stereotypes about Latinx people like they all play the victim and all they care about is moving to a sanctuary city. It was hard to make myself watch more than a few minutes to see if they made it all about immigration and victimhood so sad that they couldn't just make a great show with the awesome stories they had to work with sad.

I thoroughly enjoyed the thrilling plot, the exploration of the complex characters and I like how it's adapted to the 21st-century. Some homophobic conservatives are too close-minded and stubborn to appreciate how great this show is. I look forward to a very promising season two.
