Season 9
RuPaul's Drag Race

Critics Consensus

RuPaul's Drag Race mixes it up to highlight the show's beautiful core, which lies in the artistry of drag, the unique drama of the queens, an awful lot of self-empowerment... and, of course, Lady Gaga.

The last several years have seen each season begin with a twist, and this year is no different.

Mar 27, 2017 | Full Review…

As always, on RuPaul's Drag Race the focus is on the queens (and for about five seconds per episode, Ru's custom Klein Epstein & Parker suits); and this season, the shade (and eye shadow) is strong.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly when this season transcended into something greater, but the result is more exciting than the reason anyway.

With the introduction of a brand-new finale structure, we all learned a hard lesson about counting metaphorical chickens before they hatch.

Yes, getting Gaga represents a coup for the show, and vice versa.

Mar 26, 2019 | Full Review…

I'm really happy that the show decided to spend more time on the major topics of the season rather than being more egalitarian and giving all of the contests some screen time.

Personally, I'm a RuPaul Pollyanna. Why shouldn't drag get to cash out, now that the culture is finally ready to celebrate the artists as well as the art?

Drag Race is an endless reminder that it's possible to find love for others -- and ourselves.

It's a celebration of love, self-empowerment, and subversive fabulousness that's essential in today's climate.

Jan 26, 2018 | Full Review…

RuPaul insists that drag is not mainstream, and while it is important to respect the art form's history, there's no denying this once subversive subculture has been elevated.

Now, with a top four, it feels like RuPaul is grasping at straws in an attempt to spike interest.

Audience Reviews for RuPaul's Drag Race: Season 9

  • Mar 09, 2019
In my opinion, the season was really PERFECT from the cast, the judges, the concept, the drama and also the lip-sync. It was really entertaining to watch this season.
  • Aug 28, 2018
The Queens this season were great, fun, catchphrases galore, and some actually good runway challenges this season, however the blatent favortism towards Eureka and Aquaria made it hard to watch favorably. It wasn't a great season, but this was one of the more memorable cast in a long time.

Good cast but a little boring after the half way mark. Disappointed with the winner.
