Drag shows are not for everyone, but anyone can enjoy an insider's peek at one of the more outré forms of transformative entertainment.
Yes, it's funny and campy and an absolute treasure trove of GIFs, but it's also honest-to-god more substantive than one might expect when all you know about the show is that there are huge wigs involved.
Beyond those things, I think the show depends upon how funny you find RuPaul to be, and like with the Tic Tac-for-lunch joke that continued through the finale, RuPaul often seemed to be trying too hard and thus just isn't really funny.
Unfortunately, RuPaul's Drag Race doesn't provide such critical barbs. Instead, it speaks to the demise of camp as critique and its incorporation into capitalist values.
It's a nearly dead-on spoof of Project Runway and America's Next Top Model... Yes, Ru is playing both the Heidi and the Tim parts on this show and frankly, that's a little bit of genius.
Rather than simply treating drag performers as people to be laughed at and/or scorned, the show also focuses on the hard work and talent that goes into drag performances.
