While it amounts to that simple contrast, along the way there are events and characters that illuminate much more - this is a Mumbai overflowing with sex, drugs, violence, glamour and seediness. It is a bracing and at times brilliantly told tale.

The very expansiveness of its concerns, which incorporate the mystical-religious, set it so far apart from the customary scandi-noir that the genre feels begun anew. For Nawazuddin Siddiqui's face alone I would watch it again.

There's beauty in the way that all of this sinister intrigue is conveyed, but it's a surface-level telling of a story that wants to have so much more in its grasp.

The combination of dark humor and operatic violence may call to mind "Fargo"; the slightly hyperbolic characterizations and stylized dialogue are akin to those in "Luke Cage."

Netflix's stylized first Indian series lined up an immense roster of talent only to deliver a frustrating promise of something more interesting. For now, Sacred Games feels more like being played than playing along.
