Sally4Ever: Season 1 Reviews

There are also moments of proper brilliance.

I found it very funny for all its rawness, viciousness and cruelty and I admire Davis's fearlessness and the masterful way she makes awful people so damned likable.

Julia Davis breathes new life into it with this tart miniseries...
December 19, 2018
In theory, Davis's utter fearlessness is to be applauded. In practice, it still is - particularly as the brilliantly repellent action is accompanied by brilliantly repellent one-liners.

Sally4Ever covers all bases: the driest wit, physical humour, gross-out vignettes that are almost too hard to watch, improvised set pieces.

[Shepherd's] subdued performance is a welcome counterbalance to Emma's audacious egomania and David's simpering foolery.

British comedy about bisexuality is for mature viewers only.

Julia Davis, the English comedian, actor, writer and director who created the original (and better) version of Camping, brings a new cringe-comedy fest to HBO with Sally4Ever and it needs to be your new Brit-com obsession.

It's honestly impossible to overstate just how hilarious and (literally, physically) cringe-inducing the comedy is in Sally4Ever.
November 12, 2018
Sally4Ever might be the funniest TV series of 2018.
November 12, 2018
I'm not certain U.S. viewers are -- or will ever be -- ready... Davis's comedy is bleak and frequently surreal. Her use of grotesque caricatures feels raunchy in a dark and theatrical fashion, like Harold Pinter writing for Melissa McCarthy.
November 12, 2018
Sally4ever is too uneven in tone to recommend a committed viewing relationship.
November 12, 2018
If you like cringe comedy, then Sally4Ever is the best in this category since Ricky Gervais ruled HBO in the mid-aughts.
November 12, 2018
Sally4Ever is, if nothing else, committed to the idea that, in order to make the audience as uncomfortable as possible, it must leave the notion of comedy behind and become a full-blown horror show. There's something admirable in that, admittedly.
November 12, 2018
It's the antithesis of heartwarming, but it can leave you feeling oddly refreshed, like a bracing chill wind.
November 12, 2018
An unexpected and hilarious little comedy.
November 9, 2018
Davis is, well, outrageously compelling.
November 9, 2018
Three episodes into this seven-part season, it remains unclear what all this horrible awkwardness and explosions of bowels add up to-how much art can be found in the squicky craft of an evil clown.
November 9, 2018
Its piquancy in service of characters and relationships makes it the funniest new show of the fall, and the stateside arrival of a voice whose brashness makes clear how overdue it is to break out.
November 9, 2018
The big driver in Sally4Ever is that we absolutely believe how beaten down by life Sally is based on how splendidly Shepherd sells that, with her lips almost always crisply level, not pushed into a smile or frown.
