Good looking with a pleasing visual starkness, but boring. Small children may feel differently. Go to Full Review

A blast to watch, and you can see Tartakovsky's spaghetti western, Star Wars, Conan, and Seven Samurai influences everywhere. That makes it one of the most interesting and kinetic American cartoons you can ask for. Go to Full Review

jed i @RT01296269 12/01/2021 5.0/10 — "Poor"/"Inferior"/"Amateurish" See more 01/18/2021 The year 2001 was likely a banner year for Cartoon Network, as not only did they introduce their Adult Swim block, but they also premiered Samurai Jack, one of the most beloved animated series of the early 2000s. Fresh off the success of Dexter's Laboratory and Powerpuff Girls, creator Genndy Tartakovsky tried his hand at something a bit more action-heavy (if not exactly "darker"), resulting in a series that definitely found his unmistakable style reach an augmented artistry. The culmination of numerous pulp influences (from Akira Kurosawa movies to Frank Miller comic books), Samurai Jack may have sported a storyline that was safe-for-kids, but adult audiences would find much to appreciate from it as well. Episode after episode, the animators painstakingly gave viewers meticulous and varied new worlds (it still has some of the most impressive backgrounds in TV animation), with the more cartoon-ish character designs still conveying a sense of beauty, thanks to wise use of coloring that nod to actual Japanese paintings. As goofy as the plots could be, Samurai Jack never failed to channel the spirit of a great epic though, and the series really lucked out in casting the late great Japanese character actor Mako, who provided a voice for antagonist Aku that while nefarious was also perpetually soothing to the ears. It may talk down to kids a bit more than some other renowned animated series (Batman: The Animated Series, for example), but it was a bold new series for American animation, and certainly opened the doors for innovative animation to come in the new millennium. See more 12/28/2019 Love the style and design of this animation. Jack's journey is an interesting one and Aku is a brilliant villain. This season sets the scene well, and although there were a handful of filler episodes that were pretty bland or made little sense, the gems shine strongly enough to hit the spot.
